NEW DELHI: Memon Iqbal Mohammed
alias Iqbal Mirchi, underworld don
Dawood Ibrahim's close aide and an
accused in the 1993 serial bomb
attacks on Mumbai who is ranked
among the top 50 drug barons of the
world, was arrested by London Police
on Tuesday for a local offence in the
UK.
The 61-year-old Mirchi is wanted by
Mumbai Police in connection with a
number of narcotic drugs-related cases
and also for his alleged role in the
1993 serial blasts. An Interpol Red
Corner Notice (RCN) has been pending
against him since 1994.
"Interpol has confirmed his arrest in
London. He is currently being
questioned there. India will contact UK
authorities through diplomatic channels
and try for his extradition," said an
official here.
Mirchi was earlier arrested in London
in 1995 by Scotland Yard on drug
terrorism charges but India could not
get him extradited as charges against
him were later dropped. Since then, he
has been reportedly living in London
and Dubai and running a global drug
syndicate.
Mirchi spent 15 years in UK
A UN report has identified Iqbal Mirchi,
who was arrested in the UK on
Tuesday for a local offence, as a senior
figure in the 'D' (Dawood) company, a
worldwide organized crime syndicate
with terror links.
Iqbal Memon alias Iqbal Merchant alias
Iqbal Mirchi got 'Mirchi' as his
nickname as his family has traditionally
been in the chilli and spice business.
He has reportedly been in the drugs
trade since 1980. He had fled to Dubai
after the 1993 Mumbai blasts and
never returned to India after that.
His wife Heena Kausar, a smalltime
yesteryear Bollywood actress, had
recently come to Mumbai from London
and had moved Bombay high court
seeking lifting of a sealing order on
two flats she owns in Juhu. The flats
are in Milton Apartments on Juhu Tara
Road.
Mirchi owns rice trading businesses.
Sources here said he had contacts with
major drug smugglers all over the
world and his drug business ran into
millions. An officer said, "Mirchi has
mastered the art of removing evidence
against him in a drug crime." He
reportedly lives in a large six-bedroom
house in an exclusive part of
Hornchurch (UK). He has already
spent over 15 years there.
