Titanium sponge plant in Kollam scheduled to be operational by July 2011

Monday, 22 November 2010
The Rs. 170 crore titanium sponge plant being set up in Kollam is expected to be operational by July 2011 with a capacity of 500 tonnes per year.

Titanium sponge technology, developed by DRDL, is being transferred to Kerala Minerals and Metals Limited (KMML), situated near Kollam, Kerala, with funding from Indian Space Research Organisation, to set up the commercial sponge plant. The technology developed at DMRL bridges a critical gap - the conversion of titanium tetrachloride to titanium sponge in the ore-to-product processing of titanium.

KMML will supply the raw material - titanium dioxide - for production of titanium sponge. The mining and beneficiation of the ore, its conversion to titanium tetrachloride, and eventually pigment-grade titanium dioxide, has already been commercialised by KMML.

Defence Minister, Shri AK Antony visited the Titanium Sponge Pilot Plant at the Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL) in August this year along with Dr J Narayana Das, CC R&D (NS, M & HR), DRDO. During his visit, the minister witnessed the tapping of red-hot liquid magnesium chloride, the by-product of the Kroll's process, for the conversion of titanium tetrachloride to titanium sponge.

The 3-tonne batch capacity Titanium Sponge Pilot Plant at DMRL is the first of its kind in the country to produce premium quality titanium metal by magnesio-thermic reduction of titanium tetrachloride.

Antony also saw some of the critical titanium alloy products developed at DMRL, in association with Mishra Dhatu Nigam Limited (MIDHANI) and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited(HAL).;)

India has large deposits of rich titanium ore (third largest in the world) distributed mostly along the coast of southern peninsula. The setting up of this Titanium sponge plant will make India the fifth producer, having the technology for industrial-scale production of titanium in the world.

A Mineral Research Institute with state-of-the-art laboratories, is expected to come up soon at the KMML campus so that value-addition activities can be carried out.

Hope the environmentalists dont cry against it..

The area has huge potential in regards to rare earths. Infact majority lies in the coastal areas of Kerala, Tamilnadu and some sites in orissa. It comes around 3.1 million tons.

Hope we use it properly and cleverly.

Its uses are mind blowing. Self reliance in this critical technology is crucial for our development. Kudos to DMRL

"Titanium can be alloyed with iron, aluminium, vanadium, molybdenum, among other elements, to produce strong lightweight alloys for aerospace (jet engines, missiles, and spacecraft), military, industrial process (chemicals and petro-chemicals, desalination plants, pulp, and paper), automotive, agri-food, medical prostheses, orthopedic implants, dental and endodontic instruments and files, dental implants, sporting goods, jewelry, mobile phones, and other applications."

Hey Benny, environmentalists have a job to do and that is protect the people and the environment. Kerala has seen skyrocketing cases of cancer which is slowly being connected to the use of illegal insecticides/ pesticides and chemicals. The laws should make it a point to make sure that industries enact correct safety procedures and take heavy action against illegal dumping.

well said... industrial growth does not have to come at the cost of the environment. both can co exist if implemented correctly ( regulation)

Antony to inaugurate titanium sponge plant based on DRDO technology in Kerala

A titanium sponge plant, first of its kind in the country, will be inaugurated by Defence Minister A. K. Antony at Chavara near Kollam, Kerala, on Sunday.

A major step towards building self-reliance, the plant with a capacity to produce 500 tonnes per annum of premium quality titanium metal in the form of sponge, has been set up at Kerala Mines and Minerals Ltd (KMML), with the technology developed by Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL), a laboratory under DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organization).

Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Trivandrum, which is a major user of titanium sponge, has funded the plant.

Titanium and its alloys are strategically important material for aerospace, armour plating, naval ships, missiles, nuclear power plants and chemical industries.

They possess combination of high corrosion resistance, high strength-to-weight ratio, fatigue resistance, crack resistance and ability to withstand moderately high temperatures without creeping.

Titanium is extracted in the form of titanium sponge from its oxide minerals, however, the sponge production process is complex and cumbersome.

The technical know-how for the production of titanium sponge has so far been available with only a few countries such as Japan, USA, UK and China.

Commercial utilization of the DMRL technology for production of titanium sponge by the KMML enlists the country among nations possessing this technology.

DMRL has a strong programme for the development of aeronautical grade titanium alloys.

Technologies for such alloys have been transferred to Mishra Dhatu Nigam Limited (MIDHANI), Hyderabad.

Mining and beneficiation of the ore and its conversion to pigment grade titanium dioxide on commercial scale has been practised by KMML.

Thus, the technology developed at DMRL bridges an important gap in the ore-to-product processing of titanium, viz. conversion of titanium tetrachloride to pure titanium sponge.

India is now poised to be one amongst the select group of nations having the technology for industrial scale production of this wonder metal titanium. (ANI)

Antony is a sane-headed and intelligent guy. He knows such programs are more important than other irrelevant craps like(MRCA, Howitzer etc. etc.). No wonder, MRCA is delayed while Defence minister is busy visiting and meeting with lab guys on ground.

After Arjun scandal, he knows whom to trust and whom to not. He is a changed man now and is doing the right thing.

that;s a good news ...really i am totally impressed by Antony's work ... I hope and pray he does not get into any scandal...anyhow...
