ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani on Friday said Pakistan had already contributed enormously in the fight against terrorism and extremism, and stressed that the United States should ‘do more’ instead.

“Now it’s the time that they [United States] should do more,” Gilani told reporters after attending a ceremony at a girls college in Islamabad.

The prime minister said Pakistan during the last decade had sacrificed much in battling the menace of terrorism and emphasised that it should not be pressurised to do more.

On calling off his upcoming New York trip to attend the United Nations (UN) General Assembly session, Gilani said he wanted to supervise the relief efforts in flood-hit areas of Sindh himself.

He added that members of parliament were also busy with relief work to help overcome epidemics in the affected areas.

Speaking on the government’s relationship with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Gilani said their resignation had not been accepted so far.

Answering a question on the arrest of Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz (JSQM) chief Bashir Qureshi, the prime minister gave his assurances that there were no political prisoners in the county.

Is he joking?

If we "do more", the entire world will scream bloody murder about the jack-booted imperialists imposing their will on a helpless populace, and stealing resources. If we do less, then guys like this complain.

If he refers to aid like economic assistance, agricultural, civil engineering help, we are already pumping many billions of $$ into what is turning out to be a corrupt economic black hole. The level of corruption is making real help impossible. We (USA) do not have the manpower to create the infrastructure that would appropriately divide, deliver, and ensure that aid is used correctly.

When we deliver aid to other countries to assist in things like natural disaster, 80% of the aid is dropped off at ports and airports. It is up to the host government to do the rest. We do deliver directly, like the food & water during the Pakistani floods, but the amount of that aid is small compared to that delivered directly to the host government.
