Three Saudi doctors sue University of Ottawa
OTTAWA Three Saudi doctors have filed a blockbuster lawsuit against the University of Ottawa, seeking more than $150 million in damages for alleged discrimination, defamation and malfeasance in public office, among other things.
Dr. Waleed AlGhaithy, who was dismissed from the universitys neurosurgery program in 2009, and doctors Khalid Aba-Aikhail and Manal Al-Saigh, both residents in its cardiac surgery program, announced the lawsuit in a news release Monday.
Last March, the three filed a complaint against the university with the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario, alleging discrimination, reprisal and intimidation.
In their lawsuit, they allege a litany of misconduct: Discrimination, conspiracy to injure, malfeasance in public office, defamation, breach of contract, negligence and breaches of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
None of the allegations have been proven in court.
As well as the university itself, the lawsuit names 10 individuals, including Dr. Jacques Bradwejn, dean of the Faculty of Medicine; Dr. James Worthington, the Ottawa Hospitals vice-president of medical affairs and patient safety; Dr Paul Bragg, associate dean of postgraduate medical education; and Dr. Eric Poulin, chair of the Department of Surgery.
The 120-page statement of claim asserts that the treatment of the three Saudi doctors is part of an overall corporate culture of oppression, bullying, intimidation and false allegations within the Faculty of Medicine.
As a result, the three doctors say they have suffered loss of income and reputation, mental distress and suffering, loss of future employment as surgeons and loss of time and opportunity to pursue other medical specialties.
The statement of claim says the university has treated the three in a high-handed and oppressive manner. It says the universitys wanton and reckless conduct has caused such devastating harm that an aware of punitive and aggravated damages is warranted.
In the statement of claim, AlGhaithy claims damages of more than $50 million, Al-Saigh seeks more than $25 million and Aba-Aikhail more than $30 million. In addition, they claim a further $45 million collectively for further damages.
