Three Saudi doctors sue University of Ottawa

OTTAWA — Three Saudi doctors have filed a blockbuster lawsuit against the University of Ottawa, seeking more than $150 million in damages for alleged discrimination, defamation and malfeasance in public office, among other things.

Dr. Waleed AlGhaithy, who was dismissed from the university’s neurosurgery program in 2009, and doctors Khalid Aba-Aikhail and Manal Al-Saigh, both residents in its cardiac surgery program, announced the lawsuit in a news release Monday.

Last March, the three filed a complaint against the university with the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario, alleging discrimination, reprisal and intimidation.

In their lawsuit, they allege a litany of misconduct: Discrimination, conspiracy to injure, malfeasance in public office, defamation, breach of contract, negligence and breaches of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

None of the allegations have been proven in court.

As well as the university itself, the lawsuit names 10 individuals, including Dr. Jacques Bradwejn, dean of the Faculty of Medicine; Dr. James Worthington, the Ottawa Hospital’s vice-president of medical affairs and patient safety; Dr Paul Bragg, associate dean of postgraduate medical education; and Dr. Eric Poulin, chair of the Department of Surgery.

The 120-page statement of claim asserts that the treatment of the three Saudi doctors is part of an overall corporate culture of oppression, bullying, intimidation and false allegations within the Faculty of Medicine.

As a result, the three doctors say they have suffered loss of income and reputation, mental distress and suffering, loss of future employment as surgeons and loss of time and opportunity to pursue other medical specialties.

The statement of claim says the university has treated the three “in a high-handed and oppressive manner.” It says the university’s “wanton and reckless” conduct has caused “such devastating harm that an aware of punitive and aggravated damages is warranted.”

In the statement of claim, AlGhaithy claims damages of more than $50 million, Al-Saigh seeks more than $25 million and Aba-Aikhail more than $30 million. In addition, they claim a further $45 million collectively for further damages.

Good, teach those racist scumbags Saudis are not to be missed with.

Med Schools in Canada are messed up.
Its almost impossible to get into one here. I'm trying to get into one myself, but the system here is quite weird. Its a great achievement for Saudis to get in, however, the discrimination, defamation and malfeasance stuff is quite surprising.

Sounds pretty harsh if it is true. I thought Canada was a peaceful and tolerant country. If these things happened in its top university by top professors, well...
But then again we don't know if the claims are entirely true since no evidence has been surfaced.

Well, no country is free from racism and xenophobia. But I am sure their judicial system will deliver justice.

I was always under the impression that Canada was the most successful multicultural integrated Western Country. Considering the large Chinese/east Asian, Pakistani, Afghan, and indian origin population of Canada.

The article mentions that so far none of the allegations have been proven in court.

Med school seats shouldn

These articles were very big in Canada a while back calling for "kicking of Saudi students out of Canada because they take Canadian seats". Since them systemic discrimination have been carried out against Saudis to force them to leave because there is a large number of Saudi students training in Canada.

I wanted to go to Canada myself until my cousin's wife was kicked out of a surgery program for and get this "she dropped her pen and picked it up and continued to use it" they kicked her put for "unsanitary conduct unfit for someone in the medical progression" she went into a real bad state of depression. The question is not if it is true or not. The question is will the courthouse be fair or not.

Universities in Canada want nothing but more money. Saudis are recognized as international students. Med schools would be delighted to get $$$
Yet for local citizens, you have to work your a$$ off to get marks and to get space...Politics is every where.

Do you have any idea how hard it is to get to med school here let alone get selected on an international scholarship? In my medical college 20,000 applied only 170 were selected. You have to get higher than 99% in GPA and then you have to take the SAT which is extremely challenging then the collective sconce test. Then English language test then university test and then once you are done you have to take the medical field test.

And then after you trashes you have to take the speciality program test and then the scholarship somptetion test. These doctors went through hell to get to Canada only to see it shatter due to mistreatment and discrimination.

It's not as you make it sound not by a long shot.

Its exactly the same thing if you are a Canadian citizen, no difference.
In fact:
95+% average: in Science courses (a 4 year science degree is a must before applying)-- compulsory
MCAT: score 8 or 9 of 10 at least in individual sections
Med school Interviews
Personal Statements
Extra circular activities
Community Service in a hospital or a clinic
etc....
All this and money you give to study is not possible. Saudis are generally richer than Canadians, therefore, it makes perfect sense...

I go to a Canadian Univeristy and trust me, they are after money from International students, they rip them off. it may be true that you need high grades, but i have experienced every single education system, Pakistani/Indian, British, American, Canadian... and imo, a student living in the west has to go through more. Either people take loans , andy or work 1-2 jobs, etc to survive...

I am working my a$$ of to get in...
In the end, they take how many? 300-500 all over (17) Canadian med schools

I don't think Saudis are richer than Canadians. Canadians have a bigger GDP per-captia than Saudi Arabia. However we have it easier because we have free college education which I am beginning to see as counter-productive over all. Why?
Because a lot of capable Saudis are forced in an Educational area they don't want because other people have already filled that category seats. So far only two private universities are open in KSA and both of them only teach medicine and medical sciences we need more universities to open in the same manner but these kind of universities are reluctant to open up because of the free education given.

For us, only high school is free.... and to go to a university, almost every kid has to get a loan....
We don't have enough seats either. People either go to the U.S, Caribbean, or Europe. Its funny, we have a shortage of doctors, we have an aging population, but we don't increase the number of seats.

By the way, what medical program are you in

I am currently studying to get an MBBS degree (Medical Baccalaureate and Baccalaureate of Surgery). Using the newly designed Saudi system of education (It borrows from German newly designed system). Previously we used the British system but after experimentation we developed our own system to maximize effectiveness. Although the ones graduating under this system are better than their previous system counterparts, we get a super hard curriculum extremely dense and very full it makes you want to cry

I remember one professor telling us "We are making the curriculum hard so you have it easier when you specialize and it will only be like reviewing things you already know" I still remember the stupid smile on his face when he said that
