Your explanation is fine, but the fact is that it was and probably will be used as a slur, or a negatively connotated noun in place of calling them Indians.

The forum should be accommodative of all nationalities including Indians. It’s both the right thing to have, and it’s better for the forum in maintaining a healthy level of discussion. Start calling Indians slurs and what few knowledgable members we have of theirs, who undoubtedly contribute, will be forced to leave. I’ve seen the opposite version on India fora and it sucks.

The word "gangu" used on this forum is far from enamoring. In fact, in the context of how it's used on PDF, it's both abusive and offensive. It's already difficult to be Indian on PDF without being referred to as a "gangu."

Agree. This should be end of the discussion right here. It’s been used as a derogatory remark, and anyone arguing the technical merits is being pedantic and practising denial by elaborate explanation.

There is no singular monolthic Indian race or Indian civilization. For example, Orissa in the Eastern zone, the south or take western India for example. The culture, language, society..so grossly different than each other and none part of the Ganges or any of its tributaries. Calling Indian civilization as Ganges centric is nothing but a narrow generalization.

I think if one is looking at it and discussing it in a HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE...then it's fine(obviously not okay as a racial slur)...
...modern times are different...with our current tech humans can live and thrive almost anywhere...and over the journey of thousands of years of expanding, conquering, migrating, mixing...there's no monolithic group of ppl that can come under one term as far as their origins are concerned.

In ancient times...civilizations at big scales(for those times) mostly only emerged around agricultural centers. Hunter gatherers could never settle in one area...and all members pretty much had to do the same thing...which was to get enough food to get by and therefore couldn't specialize in other trades. With agriculture at large enough scale...not everyone had to grow food...bcuz excess food could be produced by relatively few...
...and such large scale agriculture was only possible near river systems.
