Life is ours, we live it our way
and nothing else matters
There would never be truer words than these that emanate from James Hetfield's lips in his oh-so-heavenly baritone. For any teenager this was, and will continue to be, gospel.
My affair with Metallica began in my early teens, with my then college sweetheart. Of course, that relation didn't last for long but my love for Metallica grew deeper and dearer with every passing replay. Metallica had the very essence that every hot-blooded teen would connect with -- rebellion, despair, betrayal, love, hate, accompanied by legendary guitar solos, timely drumming and perfect lyrics.
I wouldn't go out on a limb to say Metallica is the best band ever, but it definitely is the founder of thrash metal.
For all those who've never heard of Metallica, the heavy metal band was formed in October 1981 by drummer Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield (vocals, rhythm guitar). The band also includes Kirk Hammet, ranked 11th among Rolling Stone's '100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time' and bassist Robert Trujillo. With over 100 million albums sold worldwide, they are the most commercially successful heavy metal act in history.
Metallica was ranked by MTV as the third "Greatest Heavy Metal Band in History", listed fifth on VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock", and was number one on VH1's "20 Greatest Metal Bands" list.
Metallica's lyrics in the 1980s dealt with more personal and socially conscious issues. In their album Master of Puppets lyrics revolved religious and military leaders, rage, insanity, monsters, and drugs. In 1991 Metallica simplified and streamlined its music for a more commercial approach to appeal to the mainstream audience. The band abandoned its aggressive, fast tempos to expand its music and expressive range. The change in direction proved commercially successful as Metallica was the band's first album to peak at number one on the Billboard 200. In 2003, Metallica released its eighth album St Anger after replacing long-time bassist Jason Newsted. However, the album received mixed reactions from fans. Ulrich's "steely" sounding snare drum and the absence of guitar solos received particular criticism.

Some of their best songs (according to me in no particular order of preference):
Fade to Black
Solemn, soulful intros and one of the best solos in the history of heavy metal. A true masterpiece.

Unforgiven
This song was a new style for Metallica. They wanted to try a song with a heavy verse and a soft chorus, something rarely heard in hard rock. This song touches your soul and makes you reflect on life. This was the first time James Hetfield began to sing as opposed to scream. The song has a sequel -- Unforgiven 2 -- which shares the same chord structure and is equally amazing.
