Terrorists as Civilians in Channel 4 Video: Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka Defense Ministry today revealed that Issipriya a high profile member of the Tamil Tigers who died during the war was a LTTE combatant and not an innocent civilian as portrayed by the Channel 4 video.

The Defense Ministry states -

Channel 4 News revealed that one of the victims was a high profile member of the Tamil Tigers - but claimed she was just a journalist rather than a direct fighter as a result of a heart condition

Issipriya was born in 1982 in Jaffna and was subsequently recruited by the LTTE and underwent military training in the Wanni. She then served in the LTTE Military Wing and subsequently joined the "Voice of Tigers", the official radio station of the LTTE.

A report submitted to UNESCO by GoSL following the bombing of VOT by SLAF in 2007 made it clear that VOT was the official propaganda radio station of the LTTE. The LTTE cadres who died in the attack were identified as cadres who had also been actively engaged in military operations against the Security Forces.

Issipriya was given the rank of 'Lt Col' due to her contribution to the LTTE. She married a Sea Tiger cadre Sri Ram who also died in the final battle in May 2009. Sri Ram was the former LTTE Senior Sea Tiger leader in Trincomalee and took part in most of the operations launched by the LTTE against the Sri Lanka Navy and Merchant Vessels.

The identity card issued by the LTTE to Issipriya, pictured below, in which she was clad in combat attire, further confirms her military involvements with the LTTE.

Channel 4 itself notes that Issipriya inspired and glorified Black Tiger cadres who carried out suicide missions, making it clear that she played a key role in persuading youngsters to undertake suicide missions, a role that is worse than that of the misguided youngsters who are led to sacrifice themselves.

It is unfortunate that Channel 4, ignoring evidence of her active involvement in terrorist activities and driving youngsters to this, whitewashes her by claiming that she was just a journalist and not engaged in combat operations due to her health conditions.

I think there is fundamental disconnect here when I see folks like you say such stuff. Torture, rape and cold blooded murder is not the way to go if you claim yourself to be a civilized nation. Even to terrorists, you don't stoop to their level. you don't designate safe zones for civilians and then start shelling those areas. people must view the videos ( to those here who always ask for video proof) before making politically motivated statements.

there were many here who advocated the torture of kasab and I was adamant in making them understand - as a civilized country that would unacceptable of the Indian govt period had they gone that route. To stop evil you don't have to become blinded where you become the devil.

Channel 4 never said she was an innocent civilian. They clearly mentioned that she was part of LTTE and used to present news on LTTE's channel. I was no supporter of LTTE but am no supporter of war crime either. I hope justice is served.

Actually you should be very proud.Arms and ammunition sent by you may be the one that was used by SL army to repeatedly bomb hospitals and kill a total of 40,000 civilians during the last days of war.

@Topic. This lady was working for "Voice of Tigers", the official radiostation for LTTE- an organization so obsessed with documentation that they had separate combat videographer cadre. So I don't find anything unusal about her photograph in 'Tiger' uniform.

Also just because she worked LTTE doesn't give the excuse for SL Army to rape, torture and ultimately kill her. Thats nothing but warcrime. Whoever responsible will pay for their 'karma', just like Prabhakaran did.

SL must be prosecuted, but India should be neutral, because China will just get even closer to Sri Lanka, like they are doing with N Korea and Pakistan and we cant allow that.

All EX-LTTE cadres already in the process of RELEASE after Rehabilitation programs.

ANOTHER BATCH OF REHABILITATED EX-LTTE CADRES TO BE RELEASED

Another batch consisting of 500 rehabilitated LTTE cadres will be reintegrated to the society at the end of this month in Vavuniya.

Presently the cadres in the rehabilitation process are undergoing a final test in mason skills, handicraft work and paintings, Commissioner General of Rehabilitation Major General Sudantha Ranasignhe said.

The rehabilitated cadres have been given vocational, language and communication training to improve their skills and their educational knowledge.

if war crimes were committed then proper investigation should be done. as far as channel 4 video is concerned then i have my doubts abt that video, at few places it look scripted.

Even they are mentioned as "hospitals", there wasn't dozens. it just a one hospital, I'm not sure is it setup by themselves or not . just think a little bit more, only one doctor mentioning about it, what do u think about a hospital, how much staff should be there? If something has happened by mistake or Tigers trick to hit there, it's unfortunate. In the visuals you can see Tamil Tigers with blue shirts

I don't know much about military operations, but I know this that when artillery is used to pound a region, the army will have forward observation posts to confirm the artillery hit its target or not. So this means that your observation teams did not tell SLA that the rounds are falling on civilians instead of tigers. What about reconnaissance flights by SLAF?

So what about the naked Tamil women shot after being brutally raped and then loaded on to tractors as if they were a piece of trash. Was this made by Tamil Tigers also. Please don't make excuses for the inhuman behavior of your army. I hope the SL Govt has enough moral fiber left in them to punish the perpetrators of this crime.

First of all UN hasn't mentioned a "UN Report" about Sri Lanka, the report you are mentioning is Drausman report which is an advisory panel for Secretary General. Sri Lanka has Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC), They said they are investigating the Channel 4 second video too.
I have seen some of videos mentioned in that documentary 2 years ago, in one video they speak Tamil ( clip) All these type clips should be investigate and should bring the truth to the surface. But if anyone tells that SL Army's target was civilians then I strongly deny that! There were around 11000 ex-Tamil tigers in rehabilitation camps, after rehabilitation programs over 6000 back to their normal life. clear right?

You or me actually can't decided that right, if they have done such thing it's shame that's all. I have seen suicide bombs, also personally survived from one some years ago, death bodies loading isn't strange to me, even the in 2004 Tsunami death bodies.
