Taiwan to donate US$300,000 in aid to Japan
Taipei, (CNA) Taiwan will donate US$300,000 to Japan to help with disaster relief, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said Friday hours after the northeastern part of Honshu was ravaged by a magnitude 8.9 earthquake and two powerful tsunamis.
Foreign Affairs Minister Timothy C.H. Yang commissioned John Feng, Taiwan's representative in Japan, to donate US$300,000 to the "severely damaged" country on behalf of Taiwan's government, according to a MOFA statement.
The minister also asked Feng to convey to Japan's authorities the message that a Taiwanese search and rescue team is ready to be dispatched to the scene of the natural disaster at any time.
Earlier Friday, President Ma Ying-jeou and Premier Wu Den-yih both extended their sympathy and concern to Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan, according to the statement.
Taiwan's representative office in Japan is now checking the safety of Taiwanese .
