Sylhetis Are Blessed to be Part of Bangladesh

Well Sylhet had the choice between BD(former East Pakistan) and India in 1947. It chose BD.

Absolutely right that Sylhet is now part of BD - a tolerant and relatively homogenous Muslim country that has allowed Sylhet to reach it's full potential.

The alternative of Sylhet being part of Hinduvta India does not even bear thinking about.

Sylhetis have taken up some of the greatest offices in the state including the former Finance Minister Abdul Muhith.

Sylhet benefits immensely from the union with BD and in return BD has benefitted from Sylhet's gas and tea resources - one of the greatest and most successful unions in the world right now in my opinion.

PS - as @Bilal9 bhai has said BD should relax a little and allow Sylheti language to be taught in schools in the Sylhet Division. Although Bengali will still be the primary language of instruction, there will be little harm in allowing a couple of hours a week to teach the Sylheti script to school children.

I concur, what a beautiful way to describe it @UKBengali, I hope GOB recognize it and teach it in school for few hours as well. All languages (zobahn) are god given and should be respected. It’s the most civil thing to do. There is no doubt partition allowed us to enjoy our full potential and get more opportunities, that would have never happened If our ancestor remained with India. Sylhetis are Proud Bangladeshis and have the best living standard compare to other parts of Bangladesh in my opinion.

This seems like a no brainer. Sylhetis are a sizeable portion of total population and have a whole division. Sylhet should have compulsory classes for their own language and rest of BD to have optional classes where students can take it up as another language skill if they want.

Quick questions do most Bangladeshi understand Hindi-Urdu? I can understand both Hindi and Urdu for some reasons. I Can converse in it as well, it was easier for me to pick from my roommate as I understood as many of the words are similar, just different grammar and way of communicating it.

Yeah somewhat easy for Bengalis to understand just by listening to them enough times.

I understand why the government has not supported this since 1971 as BD needed to form a strong national identity first.

With a strong national identity now formed and absolutely no regrets in Sylhet in joining BD, now is the time for steps to start to be taken to formally recognise the uniqueness of Sylhet division in BD. Sylheti language should be fully supported by the central government in BD with the ultimate aim making Sylhet division fully bilingual in both Sylheti and Bengali.

Would you like to say why in your opinion?
Simple, we give way more than we get!

Since independence GOB extracting Sylhets natural wealth, destroying our environment. GOB imposing huge taxes on our income too as lots of us happens to fall under government high income list!

Now look at Sylhets infrastructures and government services, Simply 3rd class! I think we deserve better. We are paying premium for 3rd class things...

Hold a referendum in Sylhet for independence.

I believe the majority will vote for BD.

Dont think of joining India. If you are Muslim and care for the future of your children.

I do not think we should look at it this way.
Sylhet is an integral part of BD and it's resources belong to the whole of BD.

At least Sylhet is sharing it's resources with only 150 million other people rather than 1.3 billion if Sylhet joined India in 1947. Imagine being rinsed dry by Hindus and being hated at the same time for being Muslims!

Sylhet does benefit from the tea and tourism industries by huge employment from these sectors running into hundreds of thousands of jobs for a population of only 13 million.
While it does not get that much employment from it's gas industry, still there are some jobs being created for locals there.

As regards getting back, well the central government will spend 2 billion dollars on widening the Sylhet Dhaka highway and the upgradation of Sylhet's airport first phase has been approved.

As for paying high taxes from high income, well that is because Sylhet is successful within the BD Union!

People in Sylhet would think anyone who advocated a referendum on Sylhet leaving BD is mentally unwell.
There is zero interest in independence in Sylhet.

I believe charity starts from home. Only a certain percentage should be shared. But, GOB is grabbing all of it and not spending on Sylhets improvement...

I have no interest in india. My ancestors choose Pakistan for a reason...

And non of these are courtesy of GOB...

These are our gas anyway. Huge amount of non Sylhetis works there too...

Every year GOB extracts resources worth billions of dollars from our land since independence. And we should be happy with some pesky road and airport expansion projects?

Bangladeshis complain, Pakistan looted our wealth and was unjust with us. Now, what exactly GOB doing with Sylhet? They're doing the same thing shamelessly...

Yes, we Sylhetis are well off. But, neither its from government grants or from anyone else's pocket. Its from our hardwork without anybody's help even the GOBs...

No country works this way.

The resources are shared equally. No area has any ownership of the resources within it's territory.

And non of these are courtesy of GOB...

Well without Sylhet being part of BD do not expect as much BD tourists to visit Sylhet every year.
As BD gets wealtheir Sylhet will be able to tap into more and more domestic tourists from other parts of BD.

These are our gas anyway. Huge amount of non Sylhetis works there too...

You say "ours" but Sylhet is part of BD. The gas belongs to BD to be used for the development of the whole country.

Sylhet is getting the public spending as per population share.

In the Pakistan era, a more populous BD was sending money over to less populous Pakistan.

Sylhet has 8% of the population of BD and with the bulk of the natural resources of course most of the money from the extracted resources from Sylhet will be spent elsewhere in the country. That is what happens anywhere else in the world and nothing unusual.

Yes, we Sylhetis are well off. But, neither its from government grants or from anyone else's pocket. Its from our hardwork without anybody's help even the GOBs...

This is as the central government is not holding Sylhet back. Sylhet is getting an IT Park like anywhere else in BD.

Yes us Sylhetis are very hard working and that is the reason why we are successful but it is not being held back by the central government in Dhaka.
