HYDERABAD: With one-third of all swine flu samples examined by the Institute of Preventive Medicine (IPM) here in January having tested positive, the Telangana government held an urgent cabinet meeting on Wednesday to deliberate on measures to control the raging H1N1 virus.

A 26-year-old woman died early in the day at Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad, taking the toll in Telangana to 11 this month. Thirteen new cases were also reported on Wednesday.

Of the 687 samples examined by the IPM, 34.06% tested positive. Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao spent the entire day holding meetings with health and hospital officials to prepare for the visit of a Union health ministry team on Thursday.

"It's a complex situation as one-third of samples testing positive could lead to cross-infection if preventive measures are not taken immediately to identify and isolate victims suffering from swine flu for treatment," said Dr Raghupathy Anchala of the department of epidemiology, Indian Institute of Public Health.

While the dip in temperature in January is being singled out as the reason behind the surge in H1N1 cases, health experts believe the 'Sankranti effect' has played a big role. "Even a few infected persons travelling with lakhs of people to their hometowns in overcrowded public transport vehicles could have resulted in the sudden spurt as many got exposed to droplet infection or infected object," said Dr H Guru Prasad, a consultant at Yashoda Hospitals.

After Sankranti, an alarmed Andhra Pradesh government had swung into action and set up separate swine flu wards in all government hospitals and five H1N1 screening centres in three north-coastal districts in view of the outbreak in Telangana.

So far 11 cases have been detected in AP in January, with one death. But with minimum temperatures hovering around 20 degrees Celsius in most AP districts, authorities said there was no cause for concern since only cold conditions help the virus to survive.

But the disease surveillance system is below par in Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy, being manned by a team of only a dozen personnel. :hitwall:

"We've been asking for the constitution of special teams for surveillance but our demand has fallen on deaf ears," a city official said. "How do you expect us to track positive patients when 50 cases were reported from several places in the city on a single day (January 20) alone?"

Several experts who had witnessed the 2009-10 H1N1 pandemic in the city blamed the government for not issuing guidelines on who should be hospitalized and in which nodal hospitals in the city. "There's chaos this time partly because during the 2009-10 season, all swine flu patients were categorized into A, B or C category depending on the severity of their condition," said a government official.

Independent experts have advised the government to concentrate on prevention programmes in schools with instructions on dos and don'ts since even one infected child can spread the H1N1 virus.

"Hand hygiene and cough etiquette need to be taught to children," said Dr A K Prasad, chairman of the Delhi-based Influenza Foundation of India, who is in the city. A former head of medical microbiology at Delhi University, Dr Prasad said the state health administration should concentrate mostly on 'high-risk areas'

Worse is the perceived failure of the directorate of public health, Telangana, in proper management of the situation, said sources. For instance, the Telangana health department has completely sidelined Dr K Subhakar, state swine flu coordinator for the two states, as he has never been asked to be part of any official review meetings by Telangana health department for unknown reasons. :hitwall:

Guys there is no need for panic, yes there is an outbreak, wear surgical masks on while you travel outside, keep your house clean. In the meantime, please avoid meat of all kinds, especially Poultry etc.Stay away from Meat and eggs for atleast a month or two Just to be sure, if you would like to really eat meat then cook it at very high temperature for a long period.Dont go for those kebabs and grill chicken stuff.

if you notice any sort of fever of flu symptoms even though it might seem mild go and get yourself checked at the nearest hospital or government hospital which have set up screening centers now.

Telangana govt presses the panic button - The Times of India

HYDERABAD: After spending a hectic day marked by reviews and an emergency meeting of his Cabinet on the alarming increase of swine flu cases in the state, Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on Wednesday evening declared that the HINI is a "third class virus" and "the situation is totally under control."

At the media briefing after the emergency Cabinet meeting, Chandrasekhar Rao informed that so far 19 people had died of HINI in the state this winter, and admitted that the government's response in containing the disease was not up to the mark.

Responding to a question on whether the government effectively monitored each swine flu case and took precautions to prevent its spread, the chief minister said: "in some places it was done." When asked why it was not strictly done in all the cases, he did not have a clear response and merely replied: "that is how it was." When pressed on the issue, Chandrasekhar Rao said that instead of pinning down the government and finding faults, it is time to spread the message on hygiene and steps to be taken to prevent contracting the disease. "So far the government lacked an integrated approach in containing the disease," he admitted.

Isolation wards have been set up now in the government hospitals in the city and also in the area and district hospitals across the state, the chief minister said. Private hospitals too have been asked to create isolation wards to deal with the cases, he said. From now on, a daily media briefing would be held on the swine flu situation, the CM informed.

The chief minister requested people not to panic and visit a doctor if they have severe cold and cough coupled with body aches to rule out swine flu. If diagnosed with the disease, they should go to a government hospital instead of a private one as the government has stocks of Tamiflu tablets which may not be available at private hospitals. "We have 16,000 tablets at all government hospitals and have requested for another 40,000 to 50,000 from the Centre. We have also requested for 10,000 bottles of the syrup form of the medicine," he said.

Admitting that he had panicked in the morning after reading news reports about the spike in swine flu cases, Rao said that following several reviews throughout the day with doctors, health department officials and representatives of corporate hospitals, he felt confident that the situation could be brought under control.

"I thought this was an instance of the media reporting news they could access, and that swine flu is something that comes and goes," the chief minister said. He recalled that after the meeting with representatives of corporate hospitals during the day, some of them even joked that he was taking the issue too seriously. "Some representatives joked why take it so seriously?" Chandrasekhar Rao told the media.

In a bid to show that there was no panic any longer, he tried to make light of the situation by stating that "the swine flu is caused by a third class virus." :what:

But the chief minister did appear to take the matter serious enough in the morning by placing a call to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and sending an SOS for help in containing swine flu spread. Thanking him for the instant response of assistance by way of sending medicines for the disease and a three-member team of experts to review the situation in the state on Thursday, the chief minister said that he had also spoken to Union health minister J P Nadda and briefed him about the situation in the state and sought assistance. Telangana health secretary Suresh Chanda was sent to Delhi to brief Nadda.

"We have appointed a senior IAS officer as nodal officer in each district to monitor the disease who will report to the chief secretary, who will then brief me every day," Chandrasekhar Rao said.

KCR's Prescription

How is the TG govt. responding to this crisis??[I'm studying in Delhi right now, so I don't know] & how is the AP sarkar dealing with it?
I am,my friends and everyone is alright tammudu.
TG govt. doesn't know where to start it only took notice after more than 19 people died along with 300 identified cases and only 2 days ago they took serious notice of it.
The telugu media was already saying there are some cases but the TG state government brushed it under the carpet saying its nothing just common cold due to season change.
The situation in AP is more or less the same as TG. Although, i am sure CBN will keep it under control as will KCR too.But so many cases all of a sudden is called "ICEBERG Phenomenon" in PSM(Preventive Social Medicine).
Like the Tip of the iceberg might seem small on surface but the main part(unnoticed, passive cases are huge).
So expect more numbers to grow in coming weeks, unless massive Quarantine measures are not taken it will get out of hand quickly, what we see now as cases in news are just "Tip of the Iceberg" There are bound to be more than 1000+ cases by now.The Government is trying to play down fear so people don't panic.
You must have noticed how China battled with SARS(Bird flu) and recently Swine flu.
China had a massive quarantine program, where colleges and universities made it mandatory to report everyday body temperature and other symptoms on a piece of paper everyday.
They had health inspectors checking everyday every chart in Hostels etc.
I don't think KCR will mobilize such kind of force. They will wait till summer to let it die down.
So be careful till then and inform your friends and family about the precautions i said above.
It would be better if you can check body temperature daily and write it down on a piece of paper, any slight increase in temperature 2-3 degrees can be a symptom especially during such outbreak.

In December, the state's CMO was giving lame excuses saying people who died with H1N1 actually died because of secondary conditions. At least now they are taking it seriously. It looks like if KCR gets on the issue, things will at least get under control.

While TCR is busy trying to use his Owaisi goons and ruining a beautiful state.

Telangana will end up as another Bengal or UP if it continues like this.

Anna KCR keka, third class virus antane, emjeppinavanna

there was a dr. from NIMS claiming that H1N1 viruses stay alive only in cold temperatures and as winter is going to end H1N1 virus will die automatically after 3-4 weeks.. not sure how far this is true , but govt. has to take swift action in order to contain the spread of this disease and treat the patients effeciently...
