A-380 Aircraft

Sri Lankan will take delivery of two A-320 aircraft in December, 2011. Aviation Minister Priyankara Jayaratne yesterday told The Island that this would be in line with the ongoing expansion of the national career.

The Minister said that Sri Lankan would take delivery of two more A-320 aircraft by March, 2012, and A-380 aircraft capable of flying long distances, by December 2012. "Additional aircraft are needed to maintain expanding services", the MP said.

Minister Jayaratne said that the Mattala International Airport would be ready for opening by December 2012. It would accommodate the latest A-380 wide bodied aircraft.

The Minister said that almost 60 per cent of the construction of the Air Terminal, Control Tower and runaway had been completed.

Sri Lankan Airlines fleet to Increase

Five new air planes are to be added to the Sri Lankan Airlines fleet within the next five months.

The measure has been taken to increase the fleet of Sri Lankan Airlines to thirty planes within the next four years under the Mahinda Chinthanaya initiative, with the objective of making Sri Lanka the Aviation Hub of South Asia.

At present Sri Lankan Airlines consists of nineteen airplanes. Two new planes are to be added before the end of this year while three more air buses are to be purchased by March 2012.

Meanwhile, 60 per cent of the construction work at the Mattala International Airport has been completed. Since the number of tourist arrivals in the country has increased in a significant manner, arrangements have also been made to expand the Katunayake International Airport, with wide runways facilitating the A-380 Air Buses.
