Sri Lanka Army Commander meets Bangladesh PM

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army, currently visiting Bangladesh as a distinguished invitee of his Bangladesh counterpart, General Mohammed Abdul Mubeen, reached a climax on Sunday, when he had the rare distinction of paying a courtesy visit to the Hon Prime Minister of People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Mrs Sheikh Hasina Wazed, the eldest daughter of Bangladesh’s founding father.

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, together with Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya and Bangladesh’s High Commissioner for Sri Lanka Mr W.A Sarath K Waragoda during the meeting with the Bangladesh leader, exchanged pleasantries and a couple of views and recalled age-old sound relations between the two armies and the countries.

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya’s meeting with the Bangladesh Premier in his capacity as Sri Lanka’s Commander of the Army leaves an indelible mark in Sri Lanka Army’s chronicles as the first Commander who has had the privilege of directly meeting the Prime Minister (Head of State) of a country while in office.

The lady Prime Minister of Bangladesh is the widow of a reputed nuclear scientist, M. A. Wazed Miah. Mrs Sheikh Hasina before she was voted to power has once before held the PM’s office from 1996 to 2001.
