LAHORE: On the eve of the Azadi March, the spirit of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) supporters at Zaman Park seemed dampened.

Expansive tents housing hundreds of supporters, including about 50 women, were devoid of a charged-up atmosphere.

Fiza Zeeshan, senior vice president at PTI’s Lahore women’s wing, claimed the road barriers and the humid weather were responsible for the lack of excitement. “It is extremely hot and it is difficult to sit out in the open,” she said.

She claimed that thousands of women would join the march once it started.

PTI workers have been making arrangements for setting up the camp since Sunday. The eight ‘mobile toilets’ set up at the camp may have facilitated the activists, but they have also become a source of stench.

Tanzeela Imran Khan, the PTI’s Lahore women’s wing vice president, claimed that the real challenge facing the PTI supporters was the misinformation. “The problem is that when you are camped outside amongst hundreds of people, it becomes all the more difficult to verify news coming in.

False news about an apparent deal between the government and the PTI is killing the spirit,” she said.

The PTI seemed satisfied with the security arrangements in and around the camp.

However, they could not prevent the skirmishes between PTI and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz supporters, whose rally passed in front of the Zaman Park.

The provincial government placed hurdles, including containers, to block roads leading in and out of the city. However, the PTI supporters said that such steps would not stop their long march.

For Muhammad Kashif Butt, the PTI’s youth member from Badami Bagh, all obstacles were surmountable, including the apparent shortage of fuel. “We have already stored fuel in anticipation of the artificial shortage in the city over the past few days,” he said.

Some PTI supporters seemed concerned with the Pakistan Awami Tehreek’s decision to join their party’s long march.

Ali Tahir, a resident of Thokar Niaz Beg, said that PTI supporters were debating whether or not to join hands with the PAT.

“It was Tahirul Qadri party who joined the PTI’s rally and not the other way around,” he said.

Actually too much political activism would always result in such things. People can find time once or twice, but not always. Plus the merger of TuQ's PAT has hampered PTI which has introduced a sectarian flair to this supposedly political struggle. You can see Sunni Tehreek,Sunni Itehad Council (Brelvi Outfits) and Jamat-e-Wahadat (Shia Outfit) joining up with TuQ and now PTI while Shuhada Foundation, Ullema Council and now ASWJ (Deubandi outfits) joining up against PAT. Cigar Rasheed and Orphans of Gujrat may have incited Imran on allowing PAT to join them but now things are becoming clear that people rather prefer to stay home or stay afloat on Facebook and Twitter than in the streets.

As we speak, Cigar Rasheed is already in Zaman Park "advising" Imran. Rest you can infer the outcome of the activity judging from history of his pieces of advice.

Imran khan has many qualities especially being highly motivated for his age but he uses his motivation always for wrong purposes and somehow he is easily swayed by clever people which in current case are likes of Sheikh Rasheed and Chaudhary brothers. The whole agenda of his long march is selfish which has nothing to do with any problem pertaining to the lives of any major section of the society. Such selfish politics will even further reduce his political prospects in future. He still comes out as an immature politician despite having spent last 18 years in the politics, I doubt he will ever get mature as a politician as the age is not with him.

Take example of NS , he knows that he is not very good in many aspects but he acknowledges it and hires qualified people to handle such issues which are beyond his mental reach, he is able to do so because he acknowledges his lack of skills in those aspects and is willing to take advice from more informed people in those fields. The problem with imran khan is that unlike NS he thinks he has solution of everything in his mind and that he can do every thing in the world without anyone's help which is the reason why he never hires any sensible people who can groom him in the political science and strategies. Unless he comes out of his arrogance that he is the best I don't see any maturity coming into his politics. We will keep hearing about his U-turns with ever increasing frequency in the future.

Vey sensible post sir,This was from the very start a sectarian Baralvi Shia alliance against Nawaz Sharif. The support of Sunni Ittehad Council and other Barelvi groups was there though not officially from the very start. As far as MWM go,you would expect them to come out against any Pro Saudi/Gulf regime. They were never happy with Nawaz anyway

I think both PTI and PAT chose a wrong day on 14th August. Ppl r not much bothered abt the marches as of yet.

Mood will change once evening comes and independance day celebrations begin to wither away...and PAT n PTI marches join together to become big.
