Spanish Firm to Facilitate Power Import from India

Friday, 02.18.2011, 02:15pm (GMT)

Dhaka: The Bangladesh government has awarded a Spanish firm over Tk 1.0 billion project to build transmission line from Baharampur of India to Bheramara to import electricity from the neighbouring country
State-owned Power Grid Corporation of Bangladesh (PGCB) has recently inked a deal with the Spanish Cobra Instalaciones Y Servicios, SA to install a 400-kilovolt (KV) transmission line to facilitate electricity import.
The Spanish firm will complete it by 2012 establishing electricity interconnection between the two South Asian neighbouring countries.Another 230 KV Ishurdi-Khulna DC overhead transmission line is also required to be built at Bheramara for smooth transmission of Indian electricity, sources
said.
The Spanish Cobra has been selected for the Bangladesh job following a competitive bidding launched by PGCB in March last year. Manila-based multilateral donor agency - Asian Development Bank - will provide around Tk 650 million and Bangladesh government will arrange the remaining Tk 350 million to implement the project.
Installation of another 88 km electricity transmission line would also be required inside India to implement the electricity import by Bangladesh.Bangladesh plans to import around 250 megawatts (mw) of electricity initially once the infrastructure is built, said a power ministry official.
The infrastructure will facilitate importing of around 500 mw of electricity from India's state of West Bengal.

Bhel eyes $900 mn contract order from Bangladesh, Indonesia

American Chronicle | Bhel eyes $900 mn contract order from Bangladesh, Indonesia

By Utpal Bhaskar, Mint, New Delhi

Feb. 23--NEW DELHI -- State-run Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (Bhel) is pursuing two opportunities with a combined value of about $900 million ('4,068 crore) in Bangladesh and Indonesia.

India's largest power generation equipment maker is in talks with Bangladesh's Summit Group for setting up two gas-based units of 375MW each. The talks in Indonesia are with its government for setting up a 500MW plant in Sumatra.

The Bangladesh order, if secured, would be Bhel's first private sector contract in the neighbouring country.

"We are competing with others including Shandong Electric Power Construction Corp. (Sepco)," said a senior executive at Bhel who is familiar with the development. The executive did not want to be identified.

Bhel is looking abroad for contracts as it fears its domestic market share may decline to 50% in five years from 60% now due to competition from local and foreign firms.

Summit Group chairman Muhammed Aziz Khan confirmed the development.

"Summit is implementing more than 1,700MW power generation projects at this time. Among these, Bhel is in talks with us to act as EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) contract(or) for 700MW Bibyana projects. Bhel is competing with two Chinese government-owned companies and an Indian private sector company," Khan said in an email. "The order could be about $400 million and is expected to be awarded by March 2011."

He declined to name the other firms citing confidentiality agreements.

Bhel has been facing competition from Chinese power generation equipment manufacturers such as Sepco, Shanghai Electric Group Co. Ltd, Dongfang Electric Corp. and Harbin Power Equipment Co. Ltd both in the domestic and overseas markets. Chinese equipment are cheaper and immediately available.

Sepco could not be reached for comment.

On the opportunity in Indonesia, a government official from the South-East Asian country who's posted in New Delhi said Bhel is looking for a $500 million line of credit (LoC) from the Indian government, but "our government is yet to decide whether we want to use the LoC".

The official, who requested anonymity, said a location for the project is yet to be decided.

A line of credit is a specified amount of money a borrower may obtain without special checks, and offers concessional loans that carry interest of 1.75%. Both India and China have extended lines of credit to build infrastructure in energy-rich countries as they seek access to mineral resources to fuel their growing economies.

"The Indonesian project will be coal-based and we are also talking with a local partner for this project. We will sign a memorandum of understanding with the local partner," said the Bhel executive quoted earlier.

India and Indonesia signed 18 preliminary economic pacts worth more than $15 billion in January during a visit by Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to India.

Bhel had a net profit of '4,287 crore on a revenue of '34,050 crore in 2009-10. It had won physical export orders worth '3,571 crore that fiscal, and has orders worth '1.40 trillion on its book. The company has booked orders worth '2,200 crore from overseas in the current fiscal. It aims to be a $10 billion-plus company by revenue by 2012.

Canadian Investment Sought in Power Sector

Wednesday, 02.23.2011, 07:50pm (GMT)

Dhaka: Commerce Minister Faruk Khan has recently urged Canadian businessmen to invest more in the power sector to help alleviate the nagging energy crunch crippling the country.

He said so far, the Canadian entrepreneurs have invested $300 million in Bangladesh in different sectors and the bilateral trade balance between the two countries stood at $1.4 billion in fiscal 2009-10.

While inaugurating the daylong first "Canada Showcase-2011" at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre as the chief guest, the minister also sought Canada's cooperation in making Bangla as one of the official languages at the United Nations.

“The bilateral trade balance between the two countries will cross the $2.0 billion mark at the end of the current fiscal year,” said Khan at the showcase, where businessmen from both Canada and Bangladesh are displaying their products at 25 stalls.

In the two-way trade, the main Canadian exports to Bangladesh include iron and steel, pulses, cereals, machinery, oilseeds, electrical machinery and pharmaceutical raw materials.

Canadian High Commission in Bangladesh and Canada-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CanCham) jointly organised the fair.

This is really disturbing that AL government is relying too much on the bhartis and giving one after another contract to them without tender ... despite knowing bharti products are of lower quality.... N hope bd government will take measure to replace the 500 MW of electricity that they will import from India as it would not be wise to rely on the bhartis as you can trust a snake but not bharti hegemonic intention.

Next time when you travel to bangladesh, if your house is receiving electricity from Bharat made reactor. Simply shut all the instruments running on power off. Who knows Bharat made reactor might spew some venom through its hegemonic power lines. :smitten:

Is that why you are going to a Spanish Cobra to facilitate power import from India. :P

Come on Man. Its only about someone selling some "electric power" and someone else buying it. Not any other kind of POWER!

It seems the guy who started thread did not read the post himself. If you want to bash India, at least make an effort and search proper articles. Google is your friend.
