During comments made at a forum organized by the foreign policy think-tank Incipe, the Spanish army's Chief of the General Staff Jaime Domínguez Buj stated the current situation in Catalonia "pained" him deeply.

He said such events usually happened when "central power is weak".

"When the metropolis is weak, the collapse comes," General Domínguez said during the controversial appearance in what he later said was a reference to the Spanish–American wars of independence at the start of the nineteenth century.

In the case of Catalonia, he argued force could only be used "stop" an independence drive in the region but could not "change" it.

"We have to win hearts and minds," and convince people it is better to stay Spanish", he was reported as saying by participants at Tuesday's event.

But the general reminded participants the army existed to "uphold the law and the Spanish constitution" and could be used "in whatever form" the government decided.

It "is prepared to intervene at home or abroad, to go to Afghanistan or Valencia," he said in quotes cited by Spanish daily El País.

Spain's major opposition party, the Socialists, were quick to react to the comments asking for a clarification with a parliamentary spokesperson calling them "deeply inadequate".

The left-wing IU party called the comments "crazy" while the ruling Popular Party's spokesperson Alfonso Alonso called them "difficult to understand".

My personal opinion is that if a region that has a different ethnic identity wants to leave, let them leave, but most people in Spain don't think this way, but I don't think they are going to end up fighting.

So what's your opinion in how this can be resolved ?

This is nothing new, it has been going on for decades, whether it will escalate or not, I don't know, but I don't think they will harm their economy, etc by pushing too much for independence. I think it will remain at the same level as it has been. There is no solution if the parties don't agree.

I, too, believe that the best thing is to allow the Catalonians autonomy rather than complete independence from Spain. If the Catalonians were to go for independence, they would be denied the excellent social welfare system they already benefit from vis-a-vis the Spanish Government. I mean, is Catalonia's economy even capable to support the Catalonian standard of living?

Catalonia is already more rich than the rest of Spain. So, they won't have any problems. They will have some improvements as well.

I think they're the 4th richest province in Spain. However, they risk loss in security. In a worse case scenario, they should consider autonomy instead of complete independence.

syria, venezuela, north korea and russia should call for a agreement in uno general assembly calling for sanctions against spanish military because it wants to destroy the independence aspirations of a european people.

They have the biggest GDP, and 4th GDP per capita in Spain.
What's the benefit of autonomy? They already have some sort of autonomy. They can immediately join EU, which will work fine for them.

They already have autonomy, a lot, difficult to have more than what they already have. The Spanish system is set up as regions with quite a bit of autonomy and the ones that have different ethnic background have even more, their own language is the main one in their region, no cultural limitations at all, they are not oppressed in any way, simple as that, so if that is not enough for them, then independence is the only solution left.

There is no practical benefit to have independence, they already have almost everything that they can ask. What they have is not just some sort of autonomy, its one heck of an autonomy.

At this point what they want is based on a nationalistic feeling and is emotionally charged, that's all.
