Soldiers to patrol UK streets as threat raised to critical after Manchester bombing

I think it's just to send a message of reassurance to the public.

Yes this seems to be the point, to reassure the general public. And as a secondary role they can help to support the police force.

I don't think it's a bad idea to be honest.

In China, since we aren't fighting any wars, soldiers are often used for things like humanitarian relief and related work. I think this happens a lot across the world.

Well,i respect that but killing children is my red line,i have seen the picture of the eight year old girl who was killed,my niece is 7,you cant imagine what i would do if something like this would have happened to her.
No democracy can save them then

Well. It's in moment of trials and tribulations like this that you have to stand firm and carry on with your way of life/laws.
I understand your feelings though. Me myself my youngest one is 5 years old. can't imagine how I will feel if something like this ever happened to her .:(

True to some extent. Even though I still believe it's unnecessary to be honest.

On another note, Manchester United just won the Europa cup 30mins ago. So at least something to cheer about for the inhabitants of Manchester.:undecided:

more like bringing in the army because theres not enough armed police? if thats the case and word got out, its mr corbyn moving into number 10

According to the most recent figures, there were about 5,500 armed police officers in England and Wales. Half the number they were 15 years ago.

Police forces are struggling to recruit the 1,500 extra armed police pledged after the Paris attacks. Not many people want to do these jobs. Seems like anything related with Police and guns is a taboo subject. @Kaptaan

i f*cking knew it.....

When May was in the home ministry, budgets were slashed and nearly 20K police officers were cut. And now, because of budget cuts,Scotland Yard faces to loose 4K police officers. It will bring back the number of officers to pre-2003 levels. Such problems are faced by pretty all the police forces it seems.

The Tories did not pledge to up the number of police officers or budgets,in fact Amber Rudd did not rule out further cuts. Their main adversaries,Labour pledged to up the budgets and the numbers of cops by 10K.

you cant trust the tories, there all pig f*cking tossers.
labour is very left wing and like spending which is what made us attractive to eastern europeans as compared to france and germany now there getting the squeeze, and so is the local population.

No my friend. You have your figures badly wrong. Even a small county police force has more then 5,500 officers. The number of police in England and Wales is probably as much as soldiers in British Army if not more. I suspect it will be in the region of 130,000. I will get the exact figure when I get the time.

There is probably 10 applicants for each post available. The problem is not recruits but the long time it take to select, train and put into service new recruits. The gestation period can be as long as 18 months for each new batch.

My friend,I was talking about Authorised Firearms Officers (AFOs) . I know that the number of overall officers is way higher.

I'm even surprised authorised armed officers in Britain are that high. Lol Since I have hardly ever come across armed police officers here, except in very sensitive places or when there is a crisis like terrorist attack(which are very very rare anyway).
So it's good to know there are at least 5000 armed officers in England and Wales, even though it's unnecessary(except under exceptional circumstances).:D. How many times do they even use their arms in Britain each year? lol

Lool I thought so. In fact, even with those figures I still hear people saying some of those officers who used their firearms in these few cases should be prosecuted for "excessive use of force".:D. So go figure.
In fact people are even demanding Tasers should be banned from the police force(even though only a very few highly trained officers are allowed to carry one) since it's "inhuman,c an cause harm and violates human rights". :P

same here, the last time i saw armed officers was when i was walking past preston crown court not to long ago, and even then there very frequent almost daily. i just love how people move so far away from them as compared to regular officers.

Soon they'll demand to ban pepper sprays and batons. (if they have'nt already)
Maybe people should well behave and don't commit crimes and offences if they don't want to be tasered or beaten with batons. That's so easy not to commit a crime and be a law abiding citizen. Seems like it's too hard for some.
Well, you don't get it bro. For the most part, it's not even criminals who are so against the use of Tasers or even pepper spray. It's mostly law abiding citizens, it's mostly normal law abiding citizens who are campaigning against this. The thing is our people have been so used to having it easy that even the slightest use of force(in most cases justified) by police will make even normal people blame the police instead of the criminal .lol I have seen this quite a few times. Sometimes it just makes me laugh, since the first time I visited the U.S I was shocked to see how police there make arrests. Youths and even gangsters there don't mess with the police . If they say "turn around and put your fucking hands up" you better obey or face the consequences.
Here in Britain our police officers will calmly and politely ask a suspected criminal to cooperate and PLEASE put his hands up or don't resist being arrested PLEASE. Even so, the suspect (especially the youths) will still refuse to cooperate and sometimes they will even try and fight off police officers or shout insults at them etc. Having been to so many countries around the world, I can only say we are very lucky we have such a good and professional police force . You don't know what you have until you travel and see how things work in other countries. So I sympathize with some of our people who don't know this .:D

Maybe they do not know the fact that these officers are highly trained and only use their weapons in case of extreme circonstances. Hence the number of incidents in which firearms were discharged. Totally low and ridiculous.

The big part of the armed officers in UK and Wales are in London or in Greater London area, the reason you might probably don't see any very often in the rest of the country. :D

preston is a decent sized city second largest city in the northwest behind manchester. theres a large police presence in the city.
