SME's eye India's US$100 billion defence programme
Indian SME sector is eyeing a substantial chunk from India’s defence spend, which is expected to touch USD 100 billion by 2012, reports the Economic Times.
Indian SMEs are partnering with global players such as Airbus, Boeing and government agencies in a bid to pick up complex engineering projects that are being outsourced. These include building aero structures for next-generation aircrafts to unmanned combat air vehicles (UAV) and robots.
The Indian government said it will outsource work to these SMEs based on the virtue of their core competencies and unique capabilities in niche areas, the report said. However, it further added that help will be provided in every possible way.
Experts believe that the government should look at Indian firms as real partners and not just as suppliers, the report said.
