SKorean students rank nation’s enemies – Japan, NKorea, America
By Nathan Schwartzman Jun 24, 2011 1:48AM UTC
Many teenagers think that the Republic of Korea’s greatest enemy is not North Korea but Japan, a study has found. The Korea Advanced Youth Association (한국청소년미래리더연합) and Teengora Media (틴고라미디어) surveyed 2,500 middle and high school students at over 400 schools nationwide, finding that although 63.5% believe that North Korea was responsible for the sinking of the Cheonan, 44.5% said that Japan is our greatest enemy, it was announced on June 23.

With regards to the cause of the sinking of the Cheonan, 20.7% (403 students) said it was uncertain, 12.0% (235) said they didn’t know, 3.8% (74) said it was due to running aground on a submerged rock, and 63.5%(1,239) said it was due to an attack by North Korea, so the majority thought it was due to a North Korean attack.

As for what response our country should make if there were another attack from North Korea, 27.7% (534) said to respond diplomatically through the Sunshine Policy, 12.8% (246) said they did not know, and 59.6% (1,149) said there should be a strong response or immediate military action, making a strong response to a North Korean attack the most popular response.

Asked about enemies, 44.5% chose Japan, 22.1% chose North Korea, 19.9% chose the United States, 12.8% chose China and 0.6% chose Russia, showing that 44.5% of teenagers believe that Japan is an enemy.

Korean kids are indoctrinated to hate Japan at an early age, so I am not surprised.
Add to that, there extreme paranoia over a small rock call dokdo, which both Korea and Japan claim, and you have Korea's number 1 enemy, Japan.

To be fair Japanese are taught to hate everyone, especially Korea and China.
so it's not like they are any better.

Everyone hates the Americans somewhere, but most clearly do not hate America in S.Korea.
I`d say the nationalist hardliners hate America and teach their kids to hate them because they think America is controlling S.Korea.

 Polling middle school students? What would they know about world politics. They probably base their hate on game room enemies!

But students would parrot what their parents and teachers tell them. It worked even in the old West Germany. We were taught to hate and be afraid of Russia and the US is our guarantor of freedom, justice and prosperity. What they didn't teach and tell us was on what our freedom, justice and prosperity was built on. All the ongoing misery and exploitation in the former colonies were blinded out or perversely distorted. They even managed to turn us into some kind of saviours of African/ Third World misery sending OUR money to save those "incompetent" Africans. The thing is, all OUr money in fact came back into OUR pockets and poverty in Africa got worse from the 1970s till the late 1990s.

U.S. does not control S.Korea in reality???

but who taught them to hate Americans?
Their pro-NK teachers. Yes, there are a whole bunch of Kim Jong Il worshippers in ROK because ROK is a free country with a free speech.

I`d say the nationalist hardliners hate America and teach their kids to hate them because they think America is controlling S.Korea.
No, it actually has something to do with US beef. US has mad cow disease and they were afraid of the US beef, but the US was pressuring to open up Korean beef market.

The infamous 1 million men anti-US beef protest of 2008 was started by five middle school students. Conservatives blamed their teachers for brainwashing these children; nonetheless it was started by five middle school students on the street and eventually it grew to 1 million protesters, and this forced the US to change its beef export policy, guaranteeing no beef older than 3 years to Korean market. 3 year is the threshold because mad cow disease starts at age 4.

In Korea, middle school kids protest.

The US troops take orders from the Korean chief of staff from 2015 because Korean military takes the wartime command of all troops in Korea. There are two foreign military organizations that can command US troops, NATO and Korean defense ministry.

Strange but true Skorea they are kinda friendly toward china
No, China simply doesn't register into the mindset of most people. It is sort of like how Chinese doesn't care about what Mongolians or Vietnamese say about them because Chinese don't see them as "rivals". Same goes for Koreans, Koreans don't see China and Chinese as an equal to them anda threat to their well-being because PLA is seen as a joke army(The word "Tang-Dynasty Army" means a disorganized and ineffective organization in Korean language, originating from the poor performance of Chinese troops observed by Koreans throughout history), and Chinese companies do not compete with Korean companies.

This is not the case with Japan where Japan's SDF are seen as a deadly high tech force, and Japanese companies are the rivals of Korean companies fighting for market share all over the world. This is why you also see Japanese rightwingers protest against Korea and not China, because Korea is seen as a threat to preserving Japanese way of life, not China.
