Well there has been 8 chancellors since 1949 so that gives each one an average term limit of 10.625 years with the longest serving being 16 years, I imagine this will be Merkels last term. Unlike Russia where you only have to take a break after 2 terms and you can come back, hence why Putin has been the president of Russia for 2 years more than Merkel chancellor and he will probably be there for several more at the very least.

Without a term limit, is nothing but a dictator. In my opinion.
Personally speaking, This sort of set up is what keeps Germany as Germany and not some failed state.
While freedoms are important, there has to be a strong, decisive power which doesn't keep political parties in doldrums like here in India till 2013.

I'd highly prefer the German chancellery system for my country over this nonsensical parliamentary democracy.

Err - Germany is a unitary state composed of overwhelmingly ethnic Germans.

India is a multi-ethnic mish-mash. It is Indian parliamentary democracy that has kept the country together so far. Any attempt to centralise power would end up in the quick disintegration of India.

Yup you are right.

If the demographics do not change, then in 2100 in Germany will be 20 million Germans and 35 million Muslims. According to the book "Germany Is Doing Away With Itself" (Thilo Sarrazin).
They need not Chancellor they need the Kaiser, the rejection of immigrants, legal prohibition of liberalism, multiculturalism, tolerance to "minorities" and other nonsense.

1.) You are talking about the chancellery of pre war Germany, which was lightyears away from todays one.

Germany IS a parliamentary democracy. Its 2014 and not 1933.

2.) A parliamentary democracy is the only way to go for India, considering its huge and diverse population. Our founding fathers had a reason to establish one....

And Germany will have a population of 55 million or what? Thilo is a populist idiot nothing more...

It is unlikely that he can be called an "idiot". "Populist" - may be. Maybe he somewhat exaggerating, but considering the amount of migrants in Germany and the low birth rate among Germans - if nothing changes, by the end of the century the Germans would become a minority in their own country.

At this current situation, I can only see our system driving at high speed towards a wall. There is little hope of any substantial reform in Germany.

I think there should be no term limit. A person should remain a Chancellor as long as the German people want him/her to.

That's what Hitler wanted.

I strongly support term limits. not more than 2 terms period. that's why I have great admiration for American systems, although its not for everyone.

That's what Hitler wanted.
In the days of Hitler before the Germans did not loomed perspective of loss of Christian values or extinction of the German people. Hitler wanted to conquer the world, he was not tried to protect the Germans from extinction.
