Should English and Arabic be also granted Secondary status in Bangladesh?

Why not? what is the harm to it? It is actually beneficial to learn more languages and it is also an sacred language for Bangladeshis. If families wants it they should be given the opportunity to teach their kids Arabic language along with English and Sylheti (For Sylhet Division Resident Only) as well. Arabic is also one of the official language of the United Nation as well. My beloved wife used to speak Arabic as well, it’s a very useful language both in religious and commercial matters. But English must be taught at all levels without a question.

Official language - no.

English is necessary to allow BD to develop but Arabic is not necessary and should be kept at home.

If people want to set up Arabic language schools then government should not get in the way like government should not get in the way of Biharis setting up their own private schools to teach their children Urdu.

Remember we would also like Sylheti to become an official language in Sylhet division and so the children should only be burdened with learning Bengali, Sylheti and English at school. Arabic should stay in the home.

We need to be practical here.

I understand your view, but I know many multilingual societies that perform well. Languages actually makes our brain more faster and sharper, that is what study shows so I don’t think children would be burdened, I think it is actually beneficial for the development of youth to learn multiples languages, also on average the more languages a person knows the more income he or she is likely to earn in his/her life time. I will post the article there later:

You aware that Arabic is totally different language to Bengali/Sylheti and English?

To learn it to any decent level will take massive and massive amounts of efforts, which most children have no hope of being able to do

Sylheti and Bengali are very similar and so learning both does not place an undue burden on children than just learning just one of them.

All that an attempt to introduce Arabic into the school system will do is make sure that children do not learn any language to a competent level.

Like I say we need to be practical here and teaching Arabic should be no business of the government in BD

I was in Bangladesh recently most kids know how to read Arabic. Arabic language is not foreign at all in Bangladesh, in fact it is considered sacred and rightfully so and it is definitely not a burden, in fact it will broaden their horizon and makes them more smarter, at childhood level, when children learn multiples language their brain tend to be sharper which will enable them to be better at math and science and engineering as well, that is what the study shows. It is not a burden at all. Not at all

Urdu is not an important language at World stage however at this moment. Bangladeshis should definitely learn English and Arabic along with Bengali and Sylheti in Sylhet Division only.

Arabic - absolutely no way

English - not an official language but should be taught from a young age to all children.

Absolutely.

Arabic, why? are they insane?

English? Full marks to Bangladesh for getting out of this white worship 'Indian' mentality disease. Taught as a foreign language like in every other country in the world.

I can also read Arabic but I can understand it at all ,either written or spoken or be able to write in the language?
No way.

Reading by itself is nothing.

Arabic is one of the most difficult languages in the world for Bengali and English speakers to learn. We need to bear that in mind.

Sorry but you are letting your emotions get in the way of practicality here.

It’s not difficult at all, nothing is easy in this world. Many students (non Muslim) at my University actually learned Arabic and majored in it, Arabic is a beautiful language. Many universities in USA has Arabic language departments and many college kids here major in it. take a look at the American University in Washington D.C. Not for business related purposes, but I think Arabic should be understood as a language, it can strictly stay as religious language of the country however. But it has to be understood, they shouldn’t just learn to read it, but should take it to the next level for various reasons I have outlined above.

BD has no need to make English an official language as we have a lingua franca in BD and that is Bengali - nearly 80% of BD'shis speak this as their mother tongue and it is not that far off Chittagonian and Sylheti that most of the rest of the BD'shi population speaks natively.

We live in a globalized world, English must be taught in Bangladesh to provide better opportunities to young generations. World is interconnected and world economy is interconnected. It will help Bangladeshis seek jobs abroad and help
Bangladeshi economy.

I think only RSS wouldn’t want Bangladeshies to not learn Arabic lol

I disagree with your statement, studies shows children tends smarter and more cleaver and more motivated.

Bengali should remain the only official language of Bangladesh. In a monolingual country like Bangladesh, there is no justification to give official status to any other language. Not even English. English should be taught from childhood as a subject, but no official recognition.

Now come to Arabic. Arabic is perhaps the most absurd language in the world. Currently there are 22 Arab countries, they speak wildly different dialect of Arabic which often not mutually intelligible from country to country. For example, Arabic spoken in North Africa(Morocco, Algeria) is totally different from Arabic spoken in Arabian peninsula or Levant. More bizarre thing about Arabic is that Arabic uses in written from do not match with Arabic spoken by common people. The Arabs use classical Arabic for writing purpose which was used by Quraish tribe 1400 years ago, the long extinct dialect in which Quran was written. Current spoken Arabic is totally different.

And the bizarreness do not stop here, the Arabic is written from right to left, yet the numerals are written from left to right. It is particularly problematic when someone study mathematics in Arabic language. Moreover Arabic language which is written without tazwid is very difficult for any non Arabic speaker to correctly read. This Arabic script problem was one of the reason many Muslim countries(Turkey, Malaysia some others) ditched Arabic script in favor of Roman script in the beginning of 20th century.

The spoken Arabic vs Written Arabic problem is also one of the major factor of low level of literacy and intellectual bankruptcy of the Arab world. Some Arab countries like Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia are ditching Arabic in favor of French. Then why should any sane country will adopt this problematic language as an official language for no reason? just because it is considered Islamic language? But there is no rule in Islam which requires making Arabic as an official language to become pious or worthy of entering paradise. Learning Salat and some Duaa and be able to read the Quran in Arabic is enough for common Muslim. No need to burden our children requiring them to learn some worthless language which will be no use in this world and is not mandatory to shine in afterlife. Thanks.

Yes I agree but that Sylheti and Chitaggonian should be official languages in their respective divisions with Bengali.
