GUWAHATI: Tribal separatists killed at least 34 people, including four women, in a series of attacks in India's remote northeastern state of Assam on Tuesday, police said.

The attacks took place in the two districts of Kokrajhar and Sonitpur, senior state police official SN Singh said, with the deadliest claiming 26 lives.

Police blamed the attacks on the outlawed National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), which has been demanding a separate homeland for decades.

“Of the 34 killed in the two districts, 26 were in Sonitpur district, “Singh told AFP.

“There has been about four separate attacks by the NDFB,” he said.

The authorities have issued a 'red alert' in the state and imposed a night-time curfew, NDTV news channel reported.

Singh added that most of the victims of the latest fighting in the area, a site of frequent ethnic clashes, were members of the Adivasi tribal community, primarily tea plantation workers.

Assam, a tea-growing state that borders Bhutan and Bangladesh, has a long history of often violent land disputes between the indigenous Bodo tribes, Muslim settlers and the Adivasi community.

About 10,000 people fled their homes in northeast India when violent clashes over a border dispute left more than 45 people dead earlier this year.

In 2012, ethnic clashes in the same area in Assam claimed about 100 lives and displaced more than 400,000 people.

Rest in peace.

India needs to find a cure to this insurgency. Perpetual, simmering though low intensity insurgencies do pose an existential threat to the Indian federation.

They are in their dying stages. These are the last sparks. Bangladesh's support to India was their death knell.

Yes sir.
But this time NDFB just signed their own death warrant.
Now they will experisnce the ruthless hunting of central agencies with their new found capability and our GoI will ensured that. They are just looking for an excuses and NDFB gives a good excuse.

Do you think that force application is going to make this problem end rather than to make it worse?

After independence from 47 to around 90's we faced around 100 of insurgencies both big and small.During 1970s Entire India faced insurgencies even in our state.
But now there is only less than 35 .And most of them are dormant or extinct .Less than 10 are active .Though some of these are dangerous and active they cant challenge our democracy.
Economic rise of India paralysed their activities.
Fire wil surge up.just before its end.NDFB is done something like that.
Our economic rise neutralized all of them.

These people are like the TTP but on a much smaller scale. You cannot engage in dialogue with them since even they do not know what exactly it is that they want. After Bangladesh cut them off they have become more of gangsters than separatists. They bully and extort from the local people. When the locals do not or cannot comply with their demands they slaughter them as was in this case. Force is the only language which they seem to understand

Death toll has crossed 50. Who are these tribals killing?
Bodo faction which engages in terrorism is Christian predominantly. They even oppose devnagiri script of Bodo language. They have attacked Hindu adivasis and both Hindu and Muslim Bengalis.

Some Hinduwadis think they are Hindus who kill only Bangladeshi Muslims.
