Saulat Mirza’s execution likely to postpone again

ISLAMABAD: The Prime Minister Office on Friday advised President of Pakistan to defer execution of a death-row prisoner Saulat Mirza by one month.

Mirza was scheduled to be hanged on April 1st in Machh jail of Balochistan. This will be the second likely deferment since his controversial video surfaced early this month.

Our correspondent said that the Prime Minister Office has now sent its recommendation to the President of Pakistan to defer his execution by one more month.

Mirza was sentenced to death by an anti-terrorism court in May 1999 for a triple homicide.

He was convicted for killing Managing Director of Karachi Electric Supply Corporation –now K-Electric-- Shahid Hamid, his driver Ashraf Brohi, and security guard Khan Akbar in a July 1997 shooting.

His execution was earlier scheduled for March 19 was postponed for 72 hours apparently on ‘health reasons’ following his shocking video statement.

Mirza, a former political activist, claimed that Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Altaf Hussain had ordered him to carry out the murders.

He also accused the Governor of Sindh, Dr Ishrat-ul-Ebad of using his authority to have the criminals find a safe passage. Mirza also dragged Pakistan People's Party into the 'accusatory picture' by alleging that the MQM had had him facilitated when PPP was in power. - Samaa

No sympathy for Saulat Mirza. He admitted killing and he must be hanged. He had been free to do murders in Musharraf time. He was technically in prison then but he was not.
