Saab to set up R&D centre in India

I think it will depend upon MRCA deal, even though Saab has earlier stated that the JV has got nothing to do with the deal, but i hardly agree with them.. it was a marketing ploy... Anyway for them production and R&D shifting to here will make it cost effective and a good platform for marketing it in Asia.

Exactly, they start JV, coops, or build even own presence in India to divert the offsets back to India, in case they will win MMRCA, or other competitions (MRMPA with Saab 2000). That's what all the companies do and especially Saab is trying to outsource as much as possible. If you look at Gripen alone, there are companies in South Africa and now in Brazil too, that are developing parts, designs... for Saab. Makes it cheaper, but also more dependent on others!


P.S . I wonder what would happen if neither Gripen NG wins neither in India, nor in Brazil?

Sweden would most likely just upgrade their older fighters with some NG techs, but the production line would end soon and Saab Aviation would be in trouble. Would TATA be able to take over them in such a situation?
For India that would be fantastic, to have the state own HAL and the private TATA owned Saab Aviation to compete for future developments.

Saab is trying too hard, its not false to assume that if MMRCA goes to SAAB we will gain alot. Saab has already set a Research lab with Satyam Mahindra, it has JV with Tata, Pipavav and now HAL.

The idea is to "put production and further development in a vehicle (joint venture with HAL) in India

I think we should go for Tejas mk2, Saab will benefit because its already clear we will be acquiring that platform in large number.
I think if we really wanna gain in such critical fields then we have to give some incentive to these companies. I heard Defense Minister saying that we are not getting good quality ToT. Recently MOD blocked the anticipated increase in FDI (which was supposed to be increased to 49 %).

I understand the reservation but our govt. has to understand the current systen is not helping or encouraging the flow of technologies towards our countries.

Today India is becoming a global defense technological hub specially aerospace but we are not getting the high tech technologies in aerospace. Almost all major aerospace player has more than 2 JV in our country and we should salvage this.

Getting technologies through deals is not helping much. JV is much better way, like FICV, we should also open all major future weapon into competition especially AURA and AMCA.

I could also note down some critical technologies and ask these defense major to develop them in JV in our country and then award them some incentives for adding a critical technology to our database.

I heard Boeing is looking for partnership in AMCA. Also its clear boeing is sidelined by LM and NG in US specially in aerospace as most of future flying machines are theirs. We should salvage this. HAL and Boeing should tie to develop AMCA to be sold in US market with all development, research and production in India. We could also tell US that we would only sell to those who you will permit because ultimately its for us.

Similarly we should approach EADS for Talarion development. Talarion is a US Predator like UAV and we need those. The advantage is that its only a model right now, so wee can set a JV for this machine. If Talarion is rejected from EU, then we can ask EADS to develop everything in India with an Indian partner like HAL or ADA.

EADS already has tie ups in India. EADS will also agree to our offer because everything we they have done till now under this project is sponsored by the company and not any govt. but we have to award them with something because sharing their product will give them some monitory losses although tie up with a country like India will ensure the sale.
