Russian uranium for India - Voice of Russia
What is thorium known for? It is an ideal fuel with a high degree of energy thickness, and when it burns, no damage is done to the environment. India, which is one of the world leaders in the reserves of thorium, actively uses it in its nuclear projects. Indias thorium reactor remains the only one in the world today.
Russia is also very rich in thorium, and the help of its Indian colleagues would be very helpful in the development of thorium deposits in this country.
Meanwhile, the Rosatom State Nuclear Energy State Corporation has offered its Indian partners cooperation in the extraction of uranium on Russian territory and on the territories of third countries. The talks on cooperation in this field were conducted under the leadership of the Director General of Rosatom Sergei Kiriyenko at the latest session of the Russian-Indian inter-governmental commission on trade and economic cooperation, which took place in Delhi. A spokesman for the Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation Sergei Novikov says:
Russia is ready to give India a chance to become an investor and to buy some shares in the Elkon uranium deposit in Yakutia, which is regarded as the worlds second biggest deposit of uranium in the world, and to jointly extract uranium there. At the moment these proposals are being considered by UCIL (Uranium Corporation of India Ltd.) All materials have already been handed over to India.
On the Russian territory the package of the Indian partners may reach 49 per cent since we reserve a control package. In the third countries no restrictions are placed on purchasing shares - everything depends on Indias potential.
This spring Russia and India agreed a road map plan for the development of cooperation in this field, which includes the most significant, in the number of energy units, order for the Russian nuclear engineers, for the construction of a nuclear power plant abroad, and also for interaction in machine building and uranium extraction.
Construction work at the first energy unit of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant in Tamilnadu State is due to be completed by the New Year. Besides, the Indian government is now considering the issue concerning offering a third site by the year 2020, for the construction of a nuclear power plant according to the Russian project.
Cooperation between India and Russia in the nuclear field and in the field of energy production will develop successfully because India is our long-standing and reliable partner.
Thus, there have emerged many factors for the successful strategic partnership between Rosatom and India such as an extensive sales market, an exchange of experience in the development of thorium and uranium deposits, the possibility of investment, and the deep-rooted traditions of long-standing cooperation.
