Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and discussed Moscow’s efforts to help the Middle Eastern country’s economic revival, as well as trade and economic cooperation “particularly in the fields of energy, industry and increasing trade,” according to Russian sources.

Assad and the Russian envoy also discussed mechanisms to overcome obstacles including those from the sanctions which “countries against the Syrian people imposed on Syria.”

“We have made considerable progress on that matter and hope that a contract will be signed within a week and the port of Tartus will be used by Russian businesses for 49 years," Borisov was quoted by Russia’s TASS news agency.

Russia will invest 500 mln dollars in the port.

Syria is already on lease and heavily indebted to Russia anyway. Assad regime/Syria(or what is left of it) is still in power thanks to Putin. So the least they can do is this( I guess there is much more they will be handing out in future) . Wonder what Iran will be getting .

Interesting. Seems Assad is sorting his patrons out. No free meal in geopolitics. Lol
Well..he needs them for some sort of stability.. and they get some geostrategic rewards for it.. good for both, but doubtful for Iran in the long term.. I mean in the after Assad era!?

More like he needs them so that him (and by extension his Baathist party and alawites minority) can remain in power for life. lol
So in other to do this he will have to do everything to appease his patrons (mostly Russia) and Iran to some extent. It’s normal though, human beings generally will prefer to serve their interests first before looking at others , especially in closed dictatorial system with less transparency/accountability/rule of law .

Yes, we are saying the same thing..

Yeah probably in different ways.
I kind of feel bad for Syria though. They are in for even tougher times ahead. Since it seems we will be imposing sanctions against Syria (meant for the regime but the people will also suffer ), plus allowing Iran (Russia is fine ) a foothold in its seaports will bring another conflict( bombing campaigns ) with Israel, thereby destroying any little economic benefits the port might have brought to the country. :disagree:

There won't be any bombings of the ports as well as they are used for commerce..The Russian one might be military but i strongly doubt Usrael will bomb it..it is Iran it is after..not Russia.. and yes if there are sanctions..Syrian people will suffer too..it is not like they didn't suffer enough.. any sanctions now will be inhuman..or they have to be very specific about some regime personalities or political entities..they should not go beyond that..

There was competition between Russian and Iranian allies. The Russians managed to push out the Iranians from the remaining gas-plants even tho it dosen't produce much Russia wants to milk it. Iran is not happy that Russia has taken over the Energy and other sectors of the country. Basically they are pushed out and have nothing to show for.

Russia has signed an Energy and Oil deal with Damascus where Russia will take controll of it all but there is only one problem the Americans occupy that area of the land but if the Americans go all the energy goes to the Russians they have signed the deals with Damascus nothing for Iranian cheap labour. The Americans won't leave after couple of decades. They have moved in and made themselves comfortable

Well we made another sort of deal something that consist of some railroads and freeways and some pipes and a port in mediteranean and some lease on some fertile land not everything revolve around OIL or Weapons .

Oh and somedeal on rebuilding Syria.

Remains to be seen if the port will be used for commerce only. You do know that Iran will have a new gateway to better arm it’s other proxies in the region with that and from where to project power . So Israel will definitely bomb these facilities if there’s any shady deal going on there that threatens them. Reason I said it will nullify any little economic benefits the country might have gotten from the operation of the port. Israel has already carried out several strikes against Iranian and hezbollah targets in Syria. So I think this might only increase strikes in this new facility.

As for Russia, I never said Israel will bomb their military facility. In fact I clearly mentioned that Israel doesn’t have any issues with Russia’s presence in Syria . In fact Russia and Israel have fairly good or normal relations. So Israel has no real issues with Russia. Both countries might even cooperate in some fields like they have done in the past. So it’s more about Iran I guess.

Interesting. Yes I have red about their competition in Syria . It’s normal though, every country is after their own interests. So nothing unexpected.
