Russia to explore for oil in Sri Lanka
The Russian Oil and Natural Gas giant Gazprom is exploring means to enter oil exploration in the Mannar and Cauvery basin and the natural gas market in the country. An eight member delegation of Gazprom headed by its Managing Director Gulev Veleriy who are in the country at the moment met Petroleum Minister Susil Premajayantha and External Affairs Minister G.L. Peiris yesterday.
Gazprom is one of the worlds largest energy companies. Its major business lines are geological exploration, production, transportation, storage, processing and marketing of hydrocarbons as well as generation and marketing of heat and electric power.
The External Affairs Ministry said Minister Peiris discussed with the visiting delegation issues connected with Russian cooperation in such fields as oil exploration in the Mannar Basin and the Cauvery Basin, the procurement of liquid natural gas and technical expertise in respect of refineries.The Minister underlined the need for economic projects of major magnitude to strengthen strong relationships between Sri Lanka and the Russian Federation.
The visiting delegation said Gazprom would be happy to bear the expenses of training a team of Sri Lankans in one of Russias leading institutions in the field of oil and gas technology.
