TEHRAN, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- The Iranian oil minister said on Tuesday that his country has accepted Russia's proposal to construct a sub-sea pipeline for exporting natural gas to India, Tasnim news agency reported.

"The proposal was made by the Russians and Iran welcomed it," Bijan Namdar Zanganeh was quoted as saying.

A memorandum of understanding in this regard was signed during a visit to Iran by Russian President Vladimir Putin last year, Zanganeh said.

The pipeline from Iran's southern coast to India's Gujarat, via the Gulf of Oman and Indian Ocean, is supposed to carry 31.5 million cubic meters gas per day and will be built in two years.

IF THEY ARE FRIENDS LIKE IRAN AND RUSSIA IS, THEN THERE WILL BE NO PROBLEM
There is no such thing as friend or foe when it comes to national interest. If this is in the interest of Pakistan, we should deal with Iran for gas pipeline. Right Now iran is facing sanctions. Can we take risk billions of dollars?

India can use natural gas for heating, cooking, making electricity.
Unlike Pakistan, India generates only a miniscule fraction of electricity from natural gas. Thermal and hydroelectric are the main sources here. Declining output, wilful or not from KG D6 has further diminished production. Producing electricity from imported gas is a costly proposition, our neighbours know all about it, circular debt, skyrocketing tariffs, frequent power cuts et al..
