KARACHI: Russia has offered assistance in the expansion of Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM). It is also engaged in numerous projects and is cooperating with Pakistan in the construction of north and south gas pipeline from Karachi to Lahore besides working on a project at Jamshoro Power Plant for production of 600MW power. The 200 Russian companies are keen to explore opportunities in Pakistan, a top Russian leader said here on Friday.

“The bilateral trade between Pakistan and Russia improved to $660 million during 10 months of the current calendar year which is expected to reach around $750 to $800 million by year-end,” said Trade Representative of Russia Yury Kozlov during a special meeting at Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) here on Friday.

He said although there was a huge potential to boost the existing trade volume between the two countries, it had been gradually improving mainly due to lack of direct banking channels. “In this regard, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and the Central Bank of Russian Federation signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in January 2018, but the progress was too slow as not much has happened since then; therefore, the State Banks of both countries will have to act more energetically.”

Deputy Trade Representative of Russia Ruslan Aliev, KCCI President Junaid Esmail Makda, Vice President Asif Sheikh Javaid, KCCI’s Subcommittee Chairman for Diplomatic Missions and Embassies Liaison Shamoon Zaki and Managing Committee members also attended the meeting.

While handing over marketing material carrying presentations of 200 Russian companies and details of the exhibitions scheduled to be staged in Russia throughout the year, he said that all these Russian companies were keen to explore opportunities in Pakistan whereas the business and industrial community of Karachi Chamber should look into the possibility of participating in numerous trade exhibitions in Russia.

He further asked KCCI to send a trade delegation to Russia with a view to enhance the existing trade and investment cooperation between the two countries. “We are not much interested in hosting trade delegations from Business Councils or Forums but would like to see a business delegation from KCCI so that you could explore trade opportunities and improve ties with Russian counterparts,” he added.

Earlier KCCI President Junaid Esmail Makda, in his remarks, expressed concerns over nominal trade volume between the two countries which stood at around $600 million in 2017 as Pakistan exported goods worth $280.69 million while the imports increased to $310.94 million during the said period. “Bilateral trade between Pakistan and Russia is expanding but at a relatively slow pace and present trade volume does not reflect true trade potential between the two countries,” he added.

Highlighting the potential areas of enhancing cooperation between Pakistan and Russia, Junaid Makda said that the oil and gas sector and heavy industries were the two promising areas for Russian investors. “Pakistan Steel Mills, which has, unfortunately, become the dark side of Pakistan’s economy with zero production, can be turned around through Russian assistance,” he added.

He further said that Pakistani food exporters can capitalize on the ban imposed by the Russian government on agricultural imports from European countries in order to enhance their exports to Russia. Pakistan can export livestock, meat, apple, mango, citrus and seafood to Russian markets, he opined.

He further stressed the need to sign a Memorandum of Understanding between the Karachi Chamber and Moscow Chamber which would improve business linkages and bring business communities of the countries close to each other.

This is most welcome. Russia was the first country to setup Pak steel industry. It was thriving until the thieves destroyed it.

Russian expertise will turn this once healthy industry again back on track. Must make most of this opportunity.

Steel Mills needs to be rebuilt not just expanded, its been destroyed systematically.

I have my personal association with PAK STEEL.I served there for several years.I want this to be revived on war footing bases. In its peak time it was one of the biggest economic activity happening in Karachi. After revival it should be privatized as soon as possible otherwise political vultures will tear apart this again.

These are the sort of news that make me happy. More needed.

I know this needs to be translated into actions. I am tired of hearing "interested" "eager to invest" "considering large investment" ...

December 28, 2018: Due to 150 per cent growth in Information Technology (IT) and related services during recent years, total revenues of IT industry in Pakistan has crossed around US$ 4.5 billion a year.

Pakistan's IT exports have crossed US $ 3 billion per year and annual domestic revenue has reached more than US$ one billion.

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) in its report-2018 has revealed that Software Technology Parks (STPs) are a major factor in facilitating IT industry.

Currently, Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB) has made available over 800,000 sq. ft. IT enabled office space in 12 designated Software Technology Parks where around 80 public and private IT/ITeS companies are engaged in software development and export services.

The report said two more IT parks, one in Islamabad and one in Karachi are being established by PSEB.

State-of-the-art ICT communication infrastructure has been provided in STPs to ensure high quality and reliable bandwidth services. PSEB data node operation is serving over 144 IT companies working inside and outside the STPs in Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar and Abbottabad.

Companies are benefitting from co-location services to reduce Opex with uninterrupted power supply. With this facility, the PSEB has converted Islamabad STP into WiFi enabled building.

PSEB is a pivotal organization of Government of Pakistan with a mandate to ensure sustainable development of IT industry, boost cooperation with international IT entities and create attractive environment for investment in Pakistan IT sector.

There are 950 IT companies and around 650 call centers registered with PSEB. PSEB has successfully been achieving its goals with consistent growth in IT& ITeS remittances over a decade with cumulative growth rate of 20 per cent.
