Russia plans to beef up missile defense on northern Kurils, close to islands claimed by Japan

The islands can inhabit some thousands of people.

Well theoretically perhaps, but why would any Japanese or Russian would need (or want) to go and live there while many (more livable) locations in their own country are being depopulated due to population decline... I mean if Japan is having a population boom and needs more land for growth, or if there are huge oil & gas in the area then I can understand...

It's called lebensraum. Mankind has fought for land since dawn of humanity and will continue to do so until end of humanity.
