Russia may offer strategic technologies

VLADIMIR RADYUHIN

Russia may offer India strategic defence technologies to retain dominant position in the Indian crowded weapons market, said a Russian expert.

“Growing international competition for the Indian defence market will push Russia to expand its cooperation with India into new sectors where it has no rivals, such as strategic weapons and technologies,” said Konstantin Makienko of the Centre for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies (CAST) ahead of the 10th session of the India-Russia intergovernmental commission on military-technical cooperation.

The IGC commission will meet in New Delhi on October 7 under co-chair of Defence Minister A. K. Antony and his Russian counterpart, Anatoly Serdyukov.

The Russian expert suggested that the two countries could diversify their defence ties into nuclear submarine technologies despite continuing international restrictions against India.

“India's de-facto joining of the nuclear club makes such restrictions rather pointless.”

In fact, Russia is already helping India acquire nuclear submarine capability. Next March, Russia will hand over an Akula-class attack submarine, Nerpa, to India on a 10-year lease.

Its design has been largely incorporated in India's first indigenously built nuclear submarine, INS Arihant, launched last year.

Cooperation in strategic weapons will be in line with Russia's long-time policy of offering India advanced defence technologies.

“Russia is interested in strengthening India's defence potential without any limitations,” said Mr. Makienko, adding Russia was not prepared to supply China high-end weapons systems that India received.

The fifth-generation fighter aircraft (FGFA), which India will build jointly with Russia, is one example of this policy.

“The FGFA programme will enable India to join the exclusive club of nations who have such weapon systems,” he said. “It will give India an overkill capability over China, not to mention Pakistan.”:azn:

The FGFA project marks a further shift in Indo-Russian defence ties from a buyer-seller relationship to joint design and construction of new weapons systems.

TOP DESTINATION

In coming years India will remain number one destination for Russian defence sales, according to the Russian Centre for Analysis of International Weapons Trade (CAIWT). “In 2010-2013 India will account for 54.4 percent of Russian weapons exports estimated at over $15 billion,” the CAIWT said.

:cheers::cheers::cheers:

The Pak-Fa can be bought very easily by China. It's a failure and is up for grabs. Which is why India has joined the project, so that it can transfer tech.

Well neither India is bound to buy Russian arms neither Russian can sell them at gun point. India will buy what it can afford and what i needs. If Russians are competitive enough to offer they will bag some deals or they will have to stand on side and watch the candies being handed out.

LOL
S-300, Submarines, Su-30 's of china and India and various other weaponaries are the best but PAK-FA is a failure.

Why??

Coz India may get it...:lol::lol:

I remeber a few days ago you guys were yelling at Sino-Pak nuke Cooperation that I should be under the NGS guard, what should I take the current reaction of Indian members as? Hypocracy?

So you just blabber what you want to and pretend that you're making sense ?

On topic, PAK-FA is the most ambitious Indo-Russian project so far. Success in this venture would add a new dimension to Indo-Russian relationship.

Actually though India have nukes, still can buy/sell nuclear technologies from/to any other country without signing NPT/CTBT. India is the only country with such exception and IAEA/NSG accepted it, so is other countries. India also separated civilian and military nuclear labs and reactors just like other nuke weapon states.

topic: This is just a proposal from Russian expert though.

India, Russia to discuss N-sub lease and Gorshkov refit - The Times of India

NEW DELHI: The impending 10-year lease of K-152 Nerpa nuclear submarine, the over $25 billion project to acquire 250 fifth-generation fighter aircraft and the ongoing $2.33 billion refit of aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov will figure prominently in the defence meet between India and Russia this week.

Defence minister A K Antony and his Russian counterpart Anatoly Serdyukov will lead their respective delegations during the 10th India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Military Technical Cooperation ( IRIGC-MTC) on Thursday. "The two defence ministers are also expected to discuss regional and global security issues," an official said.

Cash-strapped Russia is still by far India's largest defence supplier but acrimonious negotiations over the huge cost escalation in Gorshkov's refit have led to some bitterness over the last few years, which has also been fuelled by Russia's propensity to delay deliveries, raise costs midway and not provide proper product support.

The point is not whether Russia is competitive or not, it's about what they are willing to offer us compared to others like US or EU. Nuclear subs, nuclear battle cruisers as per an article yesterday and the very best of Russian aeronautical industry without any strings attached.

How is it a failure? Because some blogger that writes Strategy Page, a publication with zero credibility, a publication that has the poorest written articles, a publication that is often inaccurate, and a publication that’s crossly bias, said so?

And how is the pak-fa up for grabs when the project has funding and is doing quite well in terms of progress, this includes testing, as well as avionics developments and new prototype currently under construction.

Financially today Russia has no problems, whatsoever, funding the project, considering Russia donates 500-700 million a year to foreign countries not including natural disasters or material donations.

I also fail to see how the pak-fa, Russia's most advanced project is up for grabs when Russian companies have showed an unwillingness to sell their technology to certain countries

I guess If Russia has a partner nation in it’s fifth generation project it’s a failure, but when the USA has many partners in the F-35 it is a success.

When you can talk on an intellectual level, come by, otherwise leave your nonsense at the door.

I guess it has to been seen in a different angle... Competitive or not... India will have one hand extended to accommodate russian arms.... Only case where it will not consider is if it is completely crap or we are able to manufacture in house equal or little less than russian quality... Other wise there will be deals with Russia every where... We are not that stupid to blindly depend on others by ditching Russia :agree:

What a BS argument... China will not be that stupid ... China has got lot of inputs from Russia right from Mig-21-- to Su 30... As far saying it as a failure ... you have to read reports properly has it has raised the eyebrows of lot of people already...
