So understanding comets is important to understand the origins of life on earth, possibly the origins of water on earth actually. It will also be really interesting when philae actually leaves the solar system (if it can Klingon to 67P long enough) and send back some pics and data from the birthplace of comets, the Oort cloud.
The Oort cloud remains one of the great mysteries of our solar system. We know it exists but we aren't sure what it looks like. It may be a ring around our system or a spheroid orbiting it beyond Pluto.

Another worthwhile endeavour is actually improving lander technology. Asteroids have tremendous amounts of platinum, diamond and palladium and mining them will one day produce possibly the greatest fortune the earth has ever known.
