It is not that easy. Our borders are next to each other. It doesn’t take long to infiltrate airspace. It is a matter of minutes and probably even seconds.

I agree this is a lapse, but one that cannot be prevented that easily.

There is only one effective solution to counter airspace violations so close to each other and that is to arm the vulnerable border areas with anti-missile systems. Anti-missile systems can engage in a matter of split seconds. Fighters cannot. Especially if they are not airborne or in immediate vicinity. It takes time before an airborne fighter is informed and reaches the place of violation. It takes even longer for a grounded fighter to reach the spot.

The alleged pictures could be from anywhere. What's needed to prove Indian claims is evidence of a destroyed structure.

Witnesses and local journalists told Al Jazeera that the Indian munitions appeared to strike a mostly uninhabited forest near the mountain village of Jaba.

"The payload was dropped near the forest in Batrasi, it is totally uninhabited," said Khalid Chaudhry, a local journalist. Two other journalists at the scene corroborated that version of events.

The Reuters news agency quoted a local villager as saying he heard four loud bangs, but that damage was limited to trees and one house.

Local residents told Al Jazeera the area was once home to a JeM training camp, but that it had been shut "years ago". They spoke on condition of anonymity, given the sensitivity of the subject.

There are four different things you need to think about in a situation such as this one.

1. Given the distance from the LOC, a competently designed and run mission profile by a low flying aircraft packet can enter PK undetected, use the terrain in its advantage, release weapons and get back over the LOC in something like 5 minutes. Even less possibly.

2. The defensive force can react to such a mission after it detects the packet. Given the distances and the terrain involved, this may have or have not happened by the time the planes were back in IK.

3. Detecting the force is one thing. Intercepting it is another all-together. Again, given the approximate time the packet stayed inside PK, it is prudent to assume that the margins were very tight for any defending force.

4. Even if the force was intercepted, you also need a clear RoI doctrine applicable at the time of said interception. This may or may have not been in place. If the defending force needed high command authorization to dispatch weapons and the outstanding RoI was to warn first, it is possible that the attacking force was well over the LOC when said authorization could have arrived.

Pakistan should have taken full advantage of the moment of chaos. This was denied and now IK's head is on the line.

We should have bounced, rebounded and aggressively attacked with a multitude of forces, instantly penetrating the core of the enemy force. IK's fault for the loss. An insult.

I dont know why most ppl talk about the physical damage, the very idea was to to target the deep state not the civilian govt in pakistan.


The air raid has achieved its result of putting the military boys on backfoot. Any big loss of civilian lives would have made Imran Khans life difficult. Now the the military in pakistan has to demonstrate they can strike back, not doing so would decrease their influence & power on civilian govt. This raid has just reinforced Imran khans position and at the same time satisfying the for retaliation requirement for the pulwama episode.
