The communications ministry has set a target to reconstruct and rehabilitate about 5000 kilometres roads across the country at a cost of Tk 36 billion by March next year.

Communications Minister Syed Abul Hossain along with other high officials of the ministry and Roads and Highways Department (RHD) revealed the plan Friday after a sudden visit at reconstruction sites of Dhaka-Mymensingh road at Gazipur.

Abul Hossain said the emergency road reconstruction drive is almost complete by which the ministry is confident that the holiday makers for Eid-ul-Fitr will be able to return to the capital city safely and more comfortably.

"We will launch the periodic maintenance work for all damaged roads and highways across the country by September 15 and the planned work will be completed within six months from its inauguration," the minister said.

Md. Mozammel Haque Khan, Communications Secretary, RHD said the ministry has estimated that it would require about Tk 36 billion to complete all the emergency maintenance and periodic permanent maintenance for about 5000 km roads.

The Communications Secretary said the ministry has so far received Tk 8 billion from the government promised Tk 21 billion fund for road reconstruction.

"The finance ministry has released Tk 6.90 billion for emergency reconstruction of 2000 kilometre damaged roads and released another Tk 1.07 billion from the approved fund of Tk 14.10 billion to rehabilitate other 3000 kilometre roads," Mozammel Haque Khan said.

The ministry further estimated that to complete all the maintenance work within stipulated time it would require another Tk 15 billion.

"We wrote to the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Finance about the requirement and requested them to immediately approve the fund so that all the roads could be permanently reconstructed at the same time," the communications secretary said.

Abdul Kuddus, Chief Engineer, RHD, said emergency reconstruction of around 2000 km road including the 120 km Dhaka- Mymensingh road which have been badly damaged due to torrential rain and inundation is almost complete under 40 different projects with the expenditure of Tk 690 crore.

He said reconstruction of another 3000 km roads are going-on full- swing under 320 different projects at an estimated cost of Tk 14.10 billion.

Md. Mozammel Haque Khan said lunching of permanent rehabilitation of all the estimated 5000 km roads are being delayed as the Ministry of Finance is delaying release of the second chunk of money.

"We have hired contractors and asking them to launch maintenance work but the contractors are not starting work on the plea that the Ministry of Finance has not yet released the majority portion of the fund," the communications secretary said.

He said if the Ministry of Finance further delay in releasing the necessary funds the cost of maintenance would go up because the remaining rain in the current monsoon will multiply the damaged conditions of the roads. —BSS

Sami Bro, welcome back.

On Topic:-

Lol, Hasina going nuts as her term is gradually coming to an end! Tk 36 billion funds involved (!!!)...you got to be kidding me.

This will be a "mega corruption" project...though i would love to be proved wrong!

God bless Bangladesh.

Cheers!!!

Great news, btw comparing it to the subcontinent, isnt India making 5000km every week?

Yes I know the size difference.

This has nothing to do with constructing new road but to repair existing roads... check your facts before posting... anyway how many kms of road india build a year!!!... it is logical that due to big size india should require couple of times more roads then bd ...
