Reactors in India four times safer: Russia

Despite the potential nuclear catastrophe in Japan, Russia has ruled out any delay in Moscow's nuclear power expansion programme with India.

Senior Russian officials on Thursday told TOI that the reactors being built in India by Russia's state-owned AtomstroyExport are "3-4 times" safer than those in Japan's Fukushima which is on the brink of a nuclear disaster.

Russian PM Vladimir Putin has ordered a review of all nuclear plants being built by Russian agencies after the tsunami-induced accident in Japan. "This is mainly for the old nuclear reactors which had been built earlier in central Asian countries and is not for the reactors being built here.

The accident in Japan is not going to slow down cooperation between the two countries. In fact, the reactors being built in India by Russian agencies are 3-4 times safer than those affected by the tsunami in Japan," said Sergey Karamalito, Russia's senior counsellor in India.

Russia is building two pressurised water reactors at Kudankulam, off the coast of Tamil Nadu, one of which is likely to be commissioned in April.

In fact, the "third-generation" safety features in the Kudankulam plants, including the design which would allow them to function safely under seismic activity, are being cited by advocates of nuclear power in Moscow to prevent any shifting of focus from nuclear power. While Russia will build two more reactors at Kudankulam, it was allotted space for six more reactors at Haripur in West Bengal.

Like in Maharashtra's Jaitapur, Haripur has seen protests by local people which have further intensified after the accident in Japan. Atomstroy had last year even conveyed to Department of Atomic Energy that it should look at the possibility of shifting the site from Haripur. Russian officials, however, said Moscow was not insisting on anything.

In terms of threat perception (wrt earthquakes, tsunamis) look at this map. Compare India and Japan

In terms of experience in operating nuclear reactors: remember we were the first nation in Asia (outside the Soviet Union ofcourse) to operate a nuclear power station.

^^^Because Russia will be the one supplying India nuclear reactors. And all non-Russian nuclear reactors are not safe !!!

:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:
HaHaHa, the biggest ones are the mega-reactors coming from AREVA in France, not Russia. BTW, GE and WESTINGHOUSE of USA are waiting patiently for some orders also. :azn:

U have just cited a pic with no color scale and it can at best be called as a collage :P

And coming to the point, the deccan plateau is one of the most geologically stable places in india.

I know it doesn't have a color scale, it just shows the different tectonic plates.

A fault-line runs right through Japan. India on the other hand is more stable. That's what I wanted to convey
