Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Friday officially inaugurated Rangs-Mahindra vehicle assembly plant at SonakhaliSyed Zakir Hossain/Dhaka Tribune
The plant hopes to see around 10-15% reduction in import costs
Rangs Group has opened Bangladesh’s first vehicle assembly plant in Narayanganj’s Sonargaon upazila where different motor vehicles will be assembled, reducing the cost of the vehicles up to 15% in the country.

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader inaugurated the assembling plant on Friday which has been built on about 40 acres of land in Sonakhali.

Initially the plant will assemble Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) pick-ups and human-haulers but will gradually also assemble different types of vehicles of different brands, Rangs Motors Managing Director (MD) Sohana Rouf Chowdhury said.

Expecting the locally assembled vehicles will cut the product deliver time and reduce import cost around 10 % to 15% Sohana said the plant has the capacity to produce more than 2,000 vehicles per year.

Rangs Motors Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dileep Banerjee said Mahindra & Mahindra will provide the completely knocked down (CKD) kits, which is a complete kit needed to assemble a product.

“Rangs new CKD plant has been equipped with all types of modern facilities and cutting edge technology,” he added.

MD Sohana said the plant is set up to meet the increasing demand for the vehicles in the country and will strengthen Bangladesh’s economy.

To ensure quality control the plant will not need any help from third parties for the plant’s large space and separate body fabrication space resulting in fast service delivery compared to other companies, she added.

“We are also excited about the prospect of 500 job opportunities in the plant and the customers will get quality vehicles and efficient services from us in lower prices compared to others,” she added.

Congratulating M&M and Rangs Group for the opening of the assembling plant, Obaidul Quader praised both the companies for setting a milestone in the country and hoped the plant will assemble fine quality vehicles and will be sustainable as well.

Obaidul also praised Rangs Group Chairperson Abdur Rouf Chowdhury for his honesty and integrity and recognised the good reputation of Mahindra products for its quality.

Chief of International Operations, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, Arvind Mathew said: “The setting up of our assembly plant in the country is a testimony of our commitment to ‘Built in Bangladesh’ products.”

With its advanced technological processes, large-scale assembly setup and eco-friendly focus, this new facility will not only add to industrial growth in the country but will also generate significant employment opportunities for local residents, he added

Rangs Motors MD Sohana also announced that one day salary of Rangs Motors and Mahindra’s staff will be given to Rohingya refugees.

Chairperson of Rangs Group Abdur Rouf Chowdhury, Managing Director of Rangs Motors, Sohana Rouf Chowdhury, Rangs Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dileep Banerjee and other high officials from both companies were present at the inauguration ceremony.

Bangladesh already had vehicle assembly plant of different types from Mitsubishi, Hino (Nissan) and even Ashok Leland. Mahindra is a trash at best - Bangladeshi buyers already knows that.
Well the headline seems to be wrong.

Dhaka Tribune reported it this way. Changing the headline.

Why is a company like RANGS paying an Indian like Dileep Banerjee to be CEO (this guy has absolutely zero qualifications to be CEO going by his experience). His only job so far has been a CEO at Rangs since getting an 'MBA' from some non-descript school in India.

My take- he is basically an Indian 'plant' in Bangladesh by Mahindra to market Mahindra's unreliable human - hauler products locally. Sad company (RANGS) selling even sadder products which are a safety-risk fit for low-level use only in remote village areas. Chang-An from China is a more reasonably priced product and far better in quality.

We should boycott Indian products immediately to protest their Myanmar-Junta appeasing policies.

A parade of ugly Mahindra products...

And here is Chang-an product which is about ten years ahead of the Mahindra offerings.

@Nilgiri look at how uppity these bngldshers are. They can’t even make a 2-stroke scooter engine yet talk like they Walton is in the same league as Porsche. Don’t they only sell 20,000(mostly second hand) cars a year?

I am sorry, no amount of b*tching will sell Indian products in Bangladesh, they all come with 'bad reputation' as standard accessory.

Pieces of garbage only good for two years of service at most. All Bangladeshi buyers (clueless they were) have been burned already and word has spread fast like wildfire. :D

No Bangladeshi assembler like RANGS will put all their options in one Indian vendor like Mahindra....they also sell Chang-An and other Chinese products.

Buyers avoid these ugly things like the plague!

let the customers decide whether to buy Indian or chinese or bangladeshi product.... based on what bdians say here indian products will be slaughtered in bd market..
at least this time you cant blame govt of india or hasina...

Bilal bhai,

If M&M products are trash, they will be rejected by BD people anyway. Why are you getting worked up?

Regards

Not getting worked up - making a point. We can't support a country (or their products) who join hands with a fascist junta conducting ethnic cleansing. Also threatening to expel 40,000 Rohingya refugees out of no fault of their own and solely based on religious discrimination.

The reaction in Bangladesh has been universal. People are prepared more than ever to reject Indian products, services and even their media. And these are educated secular people (Shahbaghis), not Jamatis.

Utter indian cow shi$t brought to you by indian puppu @Philia. Bangladesh already had vehicle assembly plant of different types from Mitsubishi, Hino (Nissan) and even Ashok Leland. Mahindra is a trash at best - Bangladeshi buyers already knows that.

C'mon bhai Philia was just reporting the news. I don't think Philia is a Puppu or an India-lover. :-)

@Bilal9, @Nilgiri

Bilalbhai,

We can't support a country (or their products) who join hands with a fascist junta conducting ethnic cleansing.

No problem, your country, your rules (Nilgiri anna wud argue your country, our rules but everyone has right to have his opinion). I hope you will be consistent though. You must boycott Chinese because they are the main financiers of the MM junta.

Regards

nothing will change, bangladeshis will buy stuff they like... did we stop buying chinese product after border faceoff? no....
leave the people to vent their emotions online.. real world is different.

Customer decision

there comes indian turd with typical BS galore. indian entities are selling on additional benefits from puppet regime. Next indians will try to use puppet regime to haul trash using these Mahindra trucks and call that a victory. Once, additional benefits gone, indians as usual will "cry uncle". Indians crying uncle means labeling Bangladesh as "fundamentalist" , "ISI" , 71 heart broken tale etc. etc. Indians never will able to come out of bottom feeding mentality .
lol.. you seemed to have resigned to your fate... no faith in your own countrymen? :)
refrain from unnecessary name calling next time please.

i cant believe the BD members here can be this retarded

if you want to see a country that allows chinese goods but bans indian goods, look at Pakistan.
their motorvehicles there are so bad that chinese manufacturers are selling them copies of indian brands and indian made bikes at a much higher cost. its so heartbreaking to watch. without indian trade, you guys would not have grown beyond 2%

Dada - just stop fibbing since you have little idea about cars. If you don't know anything about cars it's okay to admit it. Khanti dan. Nijekey ar nichey namaiyen na.

Pakistani market cars are worse than Indian ones?

So - now lets start some digging shall we?

These are what passes as high class private road transportation in India - yes Indians think of them highly, but just try selling them in Bangladesh and see if you can find some takers......

And these are the reasons why (Euro NCAP testing proving the stellar quality and rigidity of Indian sheetmetal about as good as the oil tin container below),

Yes - your purchase of Indian 'cars' comes free with guarantee of severe or fatal head and chest injuries - drawing down your life to an early and sad demise.:laughcry:

Why?

Because Indian manufacturers like Bajaj come from a country called India - where no manufacturer has standards, or values human life. The Bajaj Qute below, for example (in spite of having a darling name), does not even sport a three point seat belt. When I called this as a piece of garbage, I was being rather kind.

Here is Rajiv Bajaj's statement below, lying in front of the world about flaws of his so-called 'automobile' (which earned one star out of five) and questioning NCAP's credibility as an organization and asking them to lower their crash testing standards.

Bajaj has misled consumers on Qute crash test, says Global NCAP
According to the tests, Bajaj Qute scored just 4 out of 16 for frontal crash and 6 out of 16 for side crash.ETAuto | Updated: April 09, 2016, 13:31 IST

NEW DELHI: Taking exception to Bajaj portraying the 1 star rating in Euro NCAP crash test as a positive development, Global NCAPsecretary general David Ward has said that he was "surprised to read that a spokesman for Bajaj was reportedly 'delighted' with the one star score."

In the letter addressed to Rajiv Bajaj, managing director, Bajaj Auto, Ward said that "although the one star awarded to the Qute was a slightly better result than some of the other vehicles tested, Euro NCAP stressed that Qute does not perform well."

According to the tests, Bajaj Qute scored just 4 out of 16 for frontal crash and 6 out of 16 for side crash. The results revealed a likelihood of severe or fatal head and chest injuries, according to Global NCAP.

Ward in the letter said that it is not correct for Bajaj to compare Qute's test results to Global NCAP's test results of Indian passenger cars suggesting that the Qute had performed better than cars with a zero star result.

"To make such a comparison is misleading and wrong. The Euro NCAP quadricycle test uses a full frontal impact at 50 kmph whereas Global NCAP's passenger car tests use a 40 percent overlap impact at 64 kmph. The latter is a much tougher test and should not be used as a relevant comparison," said Ward.

Global NCAP recommended Bajaj to limit the speed of the vehicle and proposed potential improvements like fitment of a three point inertia real seat belt and an airbag, and to adopt them as a matter of urgency.

The letter also recognised Bajaj's contribution to developing products for the global automotive market and said that Bajaj has the potential to be a world class leader in promoting quadricycles that provide levels of safety equivalent to passenger cars that meet minimum United Nation's crash test standards. "I would respectfully encourage Bajaj to follow this path which is more likely to attract customer support than ignoring the safety deficiencies highlighted by Euro NCAP's recent tests.

However, Rajiv Bajaj said that Bajaj Auto is yet to receive any communication from Global NCAP.

In a statement released late Friday night, Rajiv Bajaj said that that the "Qute appears to have done relatively better in its tests than some cars did in theirs. "Do we infer basis the results that we have seen that while the Qute has achieved a 1 star rating in its category of quadricycles, several popular small cars have achieved a 0 star rating in their category? The answer is yes."

He clarified that by saying this, Bajaj Auto did not imply that quadricycles & cars are one category, undergo the same tests, & hence that these results are directly comparable?

"We would equally respectfully suggest that in the future Global NCAP reflect a little longer & exhibit greater maturity in drawing conclusions before venturing to cast unwarranted aspersion upon an organization that has a track record for integrity & performance as does Bajaj Auto," Rajiv Bajaj said.

Top Indian cars fail NCAP’s crash tests, get zero rating
Renault Kwid, Maruti Suzuki Celerio and Eeco, Mahindra Scorpio and Hyundai Eon get zero stars in Global NCAP crash tests

New Delhi: Five Indian cars on Tuesday failed crash tests conducted on them by UK-based vehicle safety assessor Global NCAP, which awarded them all zero stars out of a possible five—largely on account of the absence of airbags in the models and variants tested.

The cars tested were Renault India Pvt. Ltd’s Kwid hatchback, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd’s Celerio hatchback and Eeco van, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd’s Scorpio SUV and Hyundai Motor India Ltd’s small car Eon.

“All showed low levels of adult occupant protection,” Global NCAP said in a statement.

Global NCAP conducted these tests in association with the Institute of Road Traffic Education, Faridabad, and the ministry of road transport and highways.

India has put in place crash-testing norms modelled on international guidelines in terms of the impact vehicles would have to withstand when they are put through safety assessments. The norms take effect in October 2017 for new cars and 2019 for existing models.

In addition, an initiative called Bharat New Vehicle Safety Assessment Programme is being developed.

According to Global NCAP, three variants of the Renault Kwid were tested, including one with airbags, but each time it received a zero star for adult safety.

“Four versions of the Kwid have been produced with different safety features, with the fourth only recently released and yet to be tested by Global NCAP. Despite the safety improvements Renault has sought to introduce, all of the versions tested to date have been rated as zero star for adult protection,” the agency said in a statement.

Renault said it is committed to complying with the timelines set by the Indian government for meeting crash-testing norms.

“Safety is of paramount importance for Renault and all our products meet and exceed the requisite safety standards set by Indian Regulatory Authorities,” Renault India said in a statement.

Mumbai-based Mahindra’s Scorpio scored a zero star for adult occupant protection and two stars for child occupant protection.

“The collapse of the structure combined with the lack of airbags explains the score for the adult occupants protection, which means that there is high probability of life-threatening injuries for at least one of the adult passengers,” Global NCAP said.

In a statement, Mahindra said all its automotive products are developed and manufactured to meet or exceed the safety standards set in India.

“The star rating as released by Global NCAP (GNCAP) in the latest crash test was conducted on non-air bag variant of the Scorpio. Typically, in any star rating process, non-airbag variants do not perform well on safety standards,” the company said.

Mahindra claimed a third of Scorpio buyers choose variants of the vehicle with airbags. Mahindra claimed that many of its models exceed the expected regulations of 2019.

The non-airbag Eeco got no stars for adult occupant protection and one star for child safety.

“Considering the structural collapse, airbags are not likely to help avoid life threatening injuries to the driver,” Global NCAP said.

The non-airbag Maruti Suzuki Celerio scored zero stars for adult occupant protection and one star for child safety.

Maruti Suzuki claimed that all its products met Indian safety standards and in most cases exceeded them.

“The tests by global NCAP are conducted at speeds that are higher than those prescribed by the regulatory authorities not only in India but in Europe and USA. The results of Global NCAP have to be seen in that perspective,” it said in a statement.

The Hyundai Eon is offered in the standard version without airbags. It scored zero stars for adult occupant protection and two stars for child occupant protection.

Hyundai did not respond to requests seeking comment.

Many cars sold in India still come without airbags. The country hasn’t mandated their presence in every car. Airbags also increase the price tag of cars in what remains an extremely price-conscious market (KANJOOS!!).

Bajaj Auto Ltd’s ambitious Qute quadricycle secured a one-star rating in crash tests performed by the Brussels-based Euro New Car Assessment Programme, or Euro NCAP, an affiliate of Global NCAP, in April.

In a statement on Tuesday, Rajiv Bajaj, managing director of Bajaj Auto, said: “It is clear to me that their stand on safety is beyond my limited comprehension.”

(What he didn't comprehend that the world is not India - and to sell your garbage outside your guaranteed license-raj captive market of India you need to have some 'standards').

Bajaj was invited by the Institute of Road Traffic Education, which held the tests with Global NCAP, to speak on the quadricycle, calling Bajaj’s product a global example and a vehicle of the future.

Bajaj saw the irony in this.

“A case of wanting to have your cake & eat it too?” he quipped.

i want to said it from clearly neutral sides.

Up to now, there is no major International Car Manufacturer operated in Bangladesh (except with some Japanese brands like Mitsubhisi and other but only limited in assembly of Knock down kit operation), it's all thanks to regarding their notorious red tapes and unfriendly business environment for Major Car manufacturer to invest in Bangladesh. With the largest car assembler is Pragoti in which only able to assemble around 50000 samples since their inception in 60 decade, its a pity for a Country with large population like Bangladesh. Adding this Indian vehicle manufacturer to be operated in Bangladesh is a way to start the automotive industries in Bangladesh to start a new phase of cooperation and advancement. In short you can't be picky when considering Bangladesh automotive industries is in such pitiful state, considering the huge potential you guys had.
