Praising astrology, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday said Indian “pundits” were capable of giving accurate astronomical predictions and it was not necessary to depend on U.S. observatories to seek information on lunar or solar eclipses.

He also said India possesses knowledge in the fields such as trigonometry and algebra that no other country can match.

Addressing the convocation at Lucknow University, the Minister said: “Many times our media is confused. They say that U.S. observatory has informed about lunar and solar eclipse on a particular date...they don’t ask any ‘pundit’. They [pundits] will open the ‘panchang’ [Hindu calendar] and tell you the dates of eclipse 100 years ago and also 100 years hence.”

“Our saints had said that Earth existed 1.96 ‘arab’ [196 crore] years ago. Earlier, science did not accept this, but later it had to. Indian cosmological calculations are in tune with modern scientific calculations. I am surprised why Indian youths are so much in awe of west’s excellence in the fields of science and technology...Whatever they [west] are telling us today, our seers have said this long time back,” he said, and underlined contributions of Indians to astrology, science and mathematics.

Mr. Singh, who has been a Physics lecturer, asked students to focus on their “spiritual development” and imbibe traditional values.

“When knowledge is cut off from traditional values, it becomes disastrous. Civilisations which get cut off from their traditions and values do not survive for long. It was India which showed a big heart and gave message of “vasudhaiva kutumbakam” [the world is one family],” he said.

Asserting that knowledge devoid of values is disastrous for society, the Lucknow MP also urged youths to shun “hi and bye” culture. “Today, youths say ‘hi’ and ‘bye’ even to their parents... Instead, they should touch their parents' feet as a mark of respect,” he added.

PS: I myself being a student of electronics, will hundred percent agree to what he is saying.

I hope he would share this secret knowledge and astonish the world, instead of simply claiming that he possesses it. Sharing is caring.

Nasa has published accurate times and durations of solar eclipses for ten thousand years:
NASA - Ten Millennium Catalog of Long Solar Eclipses

The accuracy of predictions degrades severely after this point, because the inner solar system is inherently chaotic, and has a Lyapunov timescale of 50 million years. To keep it simple, it is impossible to predict using math or physics, the state of the solar system beyond a point - and eclipses upto that point have been charted out already, in great detail. I would love to know what Rajnat Singh's "pandits" can add to that information pool.

“Our saints had said that Earth existed 1.96 ‘arab’ [196 crore] years ago. Earlier, science did not accept this, but later it had to.

Then those saints were wrong by a long margin, becuse the earth was formed at least 4.5 billion years back, not 1.96 billion. However, I must point out that even such an estimate would be a great achievement, IF they had a method whereby it was obtained. If they showed everybody how the figure was arrived at, what experiments they did to ascertain, whether those experiments are repeatable by others etc, then it is of some value. Simply saying a lot of figures, and then when scientifically the correct figure is known, picking and choosing the one they said that most closely matches the scientifically determined figure, is intellectual dishonesty. Ancient Indian texts have also mentioned times in terms of yugas and kalpas, and there are legends about events on earth happening long before 5 billion years. Now if you selectively quote one figure among so many other figures talked about...

I am surprised why Indian youths are so much in awe of west’s excellence in the fields of science and technology

Umm..do I need to answer that? Think about it for a minute, Rajnath - I'm sure even you can figure it out. You don't need to consult a "pandit" to answer that one.

It was India which showed a big heart and gave message of “vasudhaiva kutumbakam” [the world is one family],” he said.

It was one particular scripture that gave that message, not the entire Indian civilization. Even today, there are brahmins who believe that crossing the ocean is a sin. Once again, you cannot pick and choose the good and claim it to be representative of your idealized notion of a golden past.

I was watching TV at 4 am one night and they had a pundit on that tv channel he was setting informercial DVD which claimed to predict every individual's history and future path

Are you staying for another 10,000 years to witness that? 100 years is quite reasonable. The point is about the calculations. I have this Panchang calendar at house it is 100% accurate. It tells us duration of eclipse also.

I recently celebrated makkar sankranti and noticed, from this day, days are longer. When the earth changes its axis.

I am sure They mauryans built their houses palace and Ashok Pillar with the help of some mathematics only.

The calculations with high power of 10's and 100's upto 10 to power 22 is already mentioned.

Time calculations they have used terms like truti , renu lava lisaka
where 1truti = 0.031 µs
1 renu = 60 truti = 1.85 µs
1 lava = 60 renu = 0.11µs
...........
1 muhurat = 2 ghati = 48 min ( it takes 1 muhurath for a hindu marriage rituals to complete)
1 Nakshatra Ahoratram = 60 Ghatis = 24 hours

Units
parmanu = 26 µs
Anu = 2 parmanu = 57µs....... and so on

  • 1 human fornight (15 days) = 1 day (light) or night of the Pitṛs.
  • 1 human month (30 days) = 1 day (light) and night of the Pitṛs.
  • 30 days of the Pitṛs = 1 month of the Pitṛs = (30 × 30 = 900 human days).
  • 12 months of the Pitṛs = 1 year of the Pitṛs = (12 months of Pitṛs × 900 human days = 10800 human days).
  • The lifespan of the Pitṛs is 100 years of the Pitṛs (= 36,000 Pitṛ days = 1,080,000 human days = 3000 human years)
It doesn't requires a PhD to understand all that.

Where do they say, earth formed 1.96 Billions years ago? They said, it also existed 1.96 Billions years ago. That means it was confirmed that the age of earth was more than 1.96 Billions years ago in that era. Or may be it was only 1.9 Billions years old when they said it, that is 3 billion years ago from now haha.

And No scientists on earth says, that the age is 4. etc etc billions years. They say, Approximately some 4.5 Billions years. +- 10 millions years.

Similalry, like they make hypothesis and theory on size of visible universe of diameter 45billion light years, through comoving distance. Even if a particle travels faster than speed of light, it does not cover 45/2 billion light years from the point of Big bang. They used a different method to calculate, which still under doubt.
