It's not often that a king comes face-to-face with an emperor but that is exactly what happened when the Netherland's King Willem-Alexander was welcomed to Japan by the country's Emperor Akhito.

The Dutch royals are beginning a six-day tour of the country, and were greeted by an honour guard as they arrived in the Japanese capital.

After a visit to a design museum and a gorgeous oriental garden, the two finished their first day with a lavish state banquet thrown in their honour.

Dazzling: Maxima wore a royal sash over her golden bejeweled gown and a large bow shaped brooch

According to the Constitution the role of the Emperor: It states that the Emperor is "the symbol of the State and of the unity of the people."

The Emperor appoints the prime minister, all ministers, and promulgates all Governors of the Prefectures. Other duties include the promulgation of laws and treaties enacted and approved by the Diet and reception of credentials of foreign ambassadors.

The Emperor also has a religious and spiritual role. When the Emperor is enthroned, through the Shinto Ritual of Daijo-Sai, the Emperor consumes consumes specially prepared ritual food, as an act of divine communion which consummates his singular unity with Amaterasu-ōmikami (The Great Sun Goddess Amaterasu), thus making him (in Shinto tradition) the intermediary between Amaterasu-ōmikami and the Japanese people.

Politically, he has the role as the Symbol of the State, and Unity of the People. Religiously and ceremonially, he has a semi-divine role, being that He literally is the intermediary between the Gods and men. This is not a myth, but a religious and Shinto Truth. This role has been in effect for over 2 thousand years.

We had the same thing, Emperor Ashoka was the one conquered whole of India (but he left all his physical empire to conquer his inner empire after Kalinga war).
Also the Princess had the choice to choose whom she wants to marry from many princes who came to claim her hand.
Sometimes, if the prince/King was busy in war he would send his Sword instead and if the princess liked that prince/king she would marry the sword, which was akin to marrying the person since, sword was held as a personal thing, there is a soul of the sword. Most of the times if you draw your dagger or sword it need to be quenched with blood, so they would cut to sate the sword. if no one was present,a slight nick of yourself where blood flows would do.
We pray to our weapons during Navaratri "9 days festival" One day is dedicated to" Ayudha puja" or Day of praying to your tools of trade or weapons.

Very interesting ritual that the Indian people have, and It's good to see that much of India's old customs are still retained to this day.
