Poverty eradication uphill task for Pakistan, India: World Bank

Long way to go though.. I'am surprised at Maldives though yes they're a small island chain and has a higher GDP per capita than SL but also a higher percentage of those under poverty, Intriguing

Yes. Although being a rather small country, the Maldives would have more inequality to me. There are less "real" middle income jobs to go around. Sri Lanka on the other hand is a much more populated country with a much more developed economy.

Lead Economist of the WB Dhaka office Zahid Hussain in a presentation said the extreme poverty has gone down as the PPP exchange rate for Bangladesh appreciated from Tk 52.4 per US$ in 2005 to Tk 24.8 per US$ in 2011 due to methodological upgradation.

I'm not entirely sure what this means. The PPP should adjust for current exchange rates.

@Nilgiri Maybe you can help?

He means international PPP "dollar" rather than USD per se on the back of revised price level information for BD (basically stuff was cheaper in BD than previously thought so they appreciated how many Taka was needed to buy every PPP international dollar)

It is effectively a fictional currency for international comparisons, though one could say 1 USD = 1 PPP dollar if they could be exchanged....since a PPP dollar is effectively what a USD could buy in physical goods in the country in question at its local price levels.
