A photo showing the gruesome sight of a huntsman spider trying to eat a possum has gone viral.

Justine Latton posted a photo of the spider attack taken by her husband Adam, an ecologist, who spotted the encounter at a lodge in Tasmania’s Mount Field National Park earlier this year.

It was accompanied with the description: ‘Possum-eating spider”.

The image posted by Justine to a Facebook wildlife site on Saturday recorded more than 5,000 shares in about 24 hours.

The couple from Tasmania said they were amazed at the reaction.

“It’s gone totally bananas. I never expected a reaction like this. I thought it may get a few ‘likes’ maybe,” Justine told Nine.com.au.

She said the sight of the spider attacking the possum – a creature much larger than its regular prey of frogs and insects - had shocked her husband.

“He’s never seen anything like it in all the work he has done.”

Huntsman spiders usually prey on insects or frogs. Maybe this one was extra hungry. (Facebook)

The image captures the spider grabbing the marsupial as it hangs helplessly in the air below.

It was greeted by wonder and shock from social media users.

“OMG what a once in a life time photo opportunity ... I would be so freaking excited if I were lucky enough to witness this ... not scary at all just interesting … Thanks for the share of such an epic photo!!” Emma Powell wrote.

“Everyone’s gotta eat, but man!” one observer posted.

Another commented: “Justine this is so interesting. Nature never ceases to amaze me”.

But others expressed shock at the size of the spider.

“Stuff of nightmares!” one person said

Another added: “That’s a solid nope from me!”

I have mega respect and fascination for Huntsman and Golden orb weavers.

The water spider that essentially glides on water is fascinating as well.
