Two persons were arrested on Friday from Punjab’s Ferozepur and Faridkot for their alleged links with four men who were caught carrying improvised explosive devices (IEDs), arms and ammunition in their vehicle at a toll plaza in Haryana’s Karnal on Thursday, police said.
The two persons –
Akashdeep (23) from Peer Kee village near Ferozepur Cantonment and Jashandeep (18), a Class 12 student from Faridkot – were in touch with the four men who were arrested after the explosives and arms were recovered from their vehicle.
Ferozepur SSP Charanjit Singh said the duo was arrested when they were trying to flee from Ferozepur in their Mahindra Scorpio SUV following the arrest of their four accomplices in Karnal.
“
Both are accomplices of the four men arrested yesterday (Thursday) at Karnal and were receiving explosives and arms, ammunition… from Pakistan and then distributing them to different sleeper cells...,” a Punjab Police officer said on condition of anonymity.
The four men – Gurpreet Singh, his brother Amandeep Singh, Parminder Singh, all residents of Vinjoke in Zira of Ferozepur, and Bhupinder Singh of Ludhiana district – were reportedly on their way to Telangana to deliver the explosives and arms when they were arrested. Jashandeep is cousin of Amandeep Singh and Gurpreet Singh, said an official.
Police said these
four men were in touch with Pakistan-based Babbar Khalsa terrorist Harwinder Singh Rinda who provided them the explosives with the help of a drone in Ferozepur recently.
Akashdeep and Jashandeep were also in touch with Rinda, they added.
Ferozepur senior superintendent of police Charanjit Singh Sohal said like the four men, Akashdeep and Jashandeep were also booked under Explosives Substances Act, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and the Indian Penal Code.
“We are interrogating both the persons and very soon, further details will be provided,” Sohal said.
The four men were sent to 10-day-police remand on Thursday.
