As you all know, the ME is populated by 3 main language families: Altaic as represented by Turkey, Indo European as represented by Iran, Semitic as represented by Arab states and Israel.

So, which is the basis for greater bond? Language or religion which are two main aspects of culture?

Actually it is a very good question...neither language nor religion can bond people if there isn't a common unifying culture...west Bengal and east Bengal has the same language..yet they got divided..telangana and andhra has same language..yet they are divided...erstwhile east and west Germany is another example..Pakistan and Bangladesh share same religion but they could not stay united..the thing is there should be understanding and give and take policy between people...but language bonds more than religion in a diverse society..a malayali Muslim is closer to hindu malayali in gulf..a Pakistani Muslim is closer to a Hindu whomspeaks Hindi in Dubai or Saudi..yeah language is ahead of religion as far as bondage between people goes.

There's a little flaw in your logic. Firstly, yes Bangladesh and West Bengal got separated because of religion but in Bangladesh, a Muslim Bangladeshi is considered to be closer to a Muslim chukma (I don't know what they are really called in English). Religion plays a much bigger role in unifying than language.

In Syria, Yemen, Iraq.... religion is first.
Azerbaijan on the other hand is much closer to Turkey, although by religion its Shia like Iran.
