Imperialism In Afghanistan
01 Jan 1885
A political cartoon (by John Tenniel) depicts a lion (which represents the United Kingdom) as it snarls from behind a slavering bear (which represents Russia), accompanied by the text 'No you don't!' as the pair stand on ground labeled 'Afghanistan,' 1885

Uncle Sam balances his new possessions, which are depicted as savage children. The 1899 figures are identified as Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Cuba Philippines and "Ladrones".

1915, 'Octopus' British Empire uneasy about 'Eagle' Germany Empire

Kaiser's Speech:

"My people! The British feel as though we are no match for their naval powers. I ask you this, what good does a large navy do, on land?" He asks with a smile. "See, they may have a superior naval force, but, their land forces are no match for Germans. Also, they are gobbling up Europe in a web of lies and useless politics. If Germany does not act soon, it will be too late to save Europe from the clutches of England. Fight them! Destroy them! Britain, consider this an official declaration of war. Long live Germany! Long live the Kaiser! And long live old Europe!" He shouts as hundreds cheer for him .

All along the German occupied Western Coast of Europe, defences are built to stop any invasion. With the majority of the coast under German control, Britain would have no choice but, to attempt to attack from the South through France.

Kaiser: "My poor bird, what has happened to your tail feathers?"
German Eagle: "Can you bear the truth, Sire?"
Kaiser: "If it's not for publication."
German Eagle: "It's like this, then. You told me the British lion was contemptible. Well—he wasn't!"

"In l877, the Czar of the mighty Russian Empire, Alexander II was waging war upon the Turks, determined to take over the country and come down to the all-important Dardanelles. The war had been going on for some time. It was said that a once mighty Ottoman Empire was now standing on its last legs."

This British "chromo" cartoon of 1901 lampoons the situation after the Boxer Rebellion was quelled: The imperial powers cluster around the prostrate carcass of the golden dragon, China, to claim their share. Newcomers Japan (sabre-toothed tiger, with samurai short sword in mouth), Italy (toothy dog in carabinieri garb) and U.S. (one of 3 eagles) are just as aggressive, though not as large, as the Russian bear and British lion. France is seen here as a rooster, Austria the two-headed eagle. In truth, economic decline and social instability had wracked China since the 1860s. Even so, by 1900 signs of imminent collapse were appearing -- a collapse greatly hastened by the dynasty's siding with the Boxers. The several years of foreign occupation and looting that ensued destabilized Chinese society and resulted in increased foreign control and further deligitimization of the dynasty. In 1902, when order was restored, it had barely 10 years to live. The toothless Republic that succeeded it never established broad national control. In less time than it takes to tell, China broke down into chaos, civil war, and warlordism -- when combined with the 8-year Japanese invasion and occupation, a dark tunnel of horrors from which the population did not emerge until 1950. This fine drawing may serve as a metaphor for the squabble of the imperial powers over how best to dismember the defunct Chinese Empire.

1890-perceptively states the principal cause of the conflict: Japan and China are both fishing for the same fish - Korea. In the background, Russia watches with avid interest.

French political cartoon from the late 1890s. A pie represents "Chine" (French for China) and is being divided between caricatures of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom, William II of Germany (who is squabbling with Queen Victoria over a borderland piece, whilst thrusting a knife into the pie to signify aggressive German intentions), Nicholas II of Russia, who is eyeing a particular piece, the French Marianne (who is diplomatically shown as not participating in the carving, and is depicted as close to Nicholas II, as a reminder of the Franco-Russian Alliance), and the Meiji Emperor of Japan, carefully contemplating which pieces to take. A stereotypical Qing official throws up his hands to try and stop them, but is powerless. It is meant to be a figurative representation of the Imperialist tendencies of these nations towards China during the decade.

The flood of immigrants into the United States in the late 1800s and labor wars that racked the nation for decades mobilized a national movement to restrict immigration. In this 1891 political cartoon, a judge scolds Uncle Sam that "If Immigration was properly Restricted you would no longer be troubled with Anarchy, Socialism, the Mafia and such kindred evils!" After he resigned from the Supreme Court in 1880, Justice William Strong became president of the National Association to Secure the Religious Amendment of the Constitution, which sought to restrict the influx of Catholic and Jewish immigrants and to declare the United States a “Christian nation.”
