DHAKA, Feb 6, 2019 (BSS)- Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is set to inaugurate six power plants, nine grid substations and one specialized electrification project for ensuring cent per cent power coverage in 12 upazilas today.

“Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate these power plants and grid substations through videoconferencing from her official Ganabhaban residence at 10am,” said Saiful Islam, Director of Public Relations of Power Development Board (PDB).

He said the six power plants are Bhola 225MW Combined Cycle Power Plant, Chandpur 200MW Power Plant, Ashuganj 150MW Power Plant, Rupsha in Khulna 105MW Power Plant, Julda in Chattogram 100MW Power Plant (3rd unit) and power supply to Sandwip Upazila through submarine cable.

The nine grid substations are Ramganj, Barishal (North), Baroiyerhat, Shikalbaha, Jaldhaka, Sunamganj, Bianibazar, Rangamati and Matarbari.

The 12 upazilas which came under cent per cent power coverage are Harinakundu, Thakurgaon sadar, Baliadangi, Goalanda, Kalukhali, Bamna, Lakhai, Shaistaganj, Ajmiriganj, Bahubal, Melandah and Islampur.

I don't know why they install such low capacity power plants. Just install 5/6 2000 to 4000 mw power plants and be done with it.

Although she sometimes speaks stupid things I am happily noting the power development activities. Actually, I was expecting the set up of many new factories by the private companies as because power is now more available but it is not happening that way. A little disappointed.

Especially if this is the reason behind it:

‘Import of capital machinery fell by 15 per cent in July-December of FY18 and it again declined by another 5 per cent in the same period of FY19,’ he said.
Such decline in import of capital machinery would ultimately hamper investment at large, he said.

More responsive to the loading and existing transmission infra in place most likely. This is why there is big difference between the peak output rate of BD and its annualised average rate. Looks like you are banned, so when you come back, can discuss more on it if you want.

Those will come in eventually. Massive plants require massive cash outlay.

Locally anchored barge mounted plants (even rentals) helped Bangladesh tide over issues that other countries faced (Pakistan comes to mind). Bangladesh is basically producing more electricity than ever needed before and keeping pace with growing demand. Which is more than can be said about a lot of populated undeveloped countries.

This is crucial for growing industrialization.

Every consecutive year I stay in Bangladesh - the less load-shedding I see. Things have never been better and with better governance (preventing theft for example with prepaid meters etc.). Even counting massive increased wealth/lifestyle and popularity of electrical appliances and most importantly big electricity guzzlers like Air-cons, Irons, Hair Dryers and Refrigerators.

But putting in multiple smaller capacity plants helps in ensuring redundancy and helps satisfy local demand. As we all know transporting electricity over long distances results in quite a bit of System Loss. Also it introduces risk of transmission lines going down in storms/hurricanes and inclement weather.

No one can dictate a business investment company. It cuts the coat in accordance with the available cloth. A 4,000 mW power plant may cost more or less 4,000 million dollars. You will understand that it is not very cheap.
