Calcutta, Nov. 6: Calcutta University has sent an invitation that could lead to what Delhi could not manage: a meeting between Mamata Banerjee and Sheikh Hasina.
The university has invited the Bangladesh Prime Minister to attend its convocation, to be held some time in December or early January, sources said.
The university has extended the invitation to the Bangladeshi leader with the consent of the chancellor, governor M.K. Narayanan, and the approval of the state government.
The Bangladesh government has received the invitation, sources in the office of Hasinas international affairs adviser, Gowher Rizvi, said in Dhaka. The Prime Ministers Office in Delhi is expected to contact its counterpart in Dhaka after Id celebrations are over tomorrow.
If Hasina accepts the invitation, Mamata is expected to hold talks with the Bangladesh Prime Minister. Mamata had pulled out of the Indian Prime Ministers delegation to Dhaka in September after differences cropped up over the Teesta water-sharing deal. When Hasina visited the Tin Bigha corridor in Bengal in October, the visit was too short for Mamata to meet her.
If the visit comes through, Hasina will also be awarded with a doctor of law degree honoris causa.
Calcutta University vice-chancellor Suranjan Das said: We are trying to bring together universities in the South Asian region, and this is another step in that direction. We had invited the Bhutan king last year with the same intention.
He added: We are very eager that Sheikh Hasina attends the convocation when, according to convention, she will be honoured with a doctorate. The final decision will be taken by the universitys senate.
