PM for high-speed tourist train on Dhaka-Cox’s Bazar route
262

DHAKA, May 25, 2019 (BSS) – Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today said her government could introduce a high-speed tourist train on Dhaka-Cox’s Bazar route.

“We think we will be able to introduce a high-speed tourist train on Dhaka-Cox’s Bazar route as a rail line is being constructed on Chottagram-Cox’s Bazar route,” she said.

Sheikh Hasian said this while launching a new semi-nonstop intercity train service on Dhaka-Panchagarh route named “Panchagarh Express” through video conferencing from her Ganabhaban residence here.

Highlighting various steps of her government for expanding the rail network across the country, the premier said a rail line is being constructed on the Padma Bridge and it will be extended up to Barishal.

In this context, she mentioned that the government has a plan to further expand the rail network from Barisal to Payra and from Panchagarh to Banglabandha.

At the same time, the government has also taken necessary measures to connect the country with regional and Trans Asian Rail Networks, she added.

The Prime Minister described various steps of her government for the development of railways saying, “Many new stations and new trains were introduced, while signaling system was modernised alongside constructing 346 kilometres new rail lines across the country.”

Sheikh Hasina pointed out that her government constituted a new ministry for the railway after coming to power in 2009 and undertook massive works for the development of the railway.

The premier has asked the authorities concerned to procure more modern passenger coaches and wagons for Bangladesh Railway to meet the growing demands of transportation of passengers and goods.

Apart from this, she stressed the need for achieving capability of building on our own modern wagons and coaches for which she advocated the need for modernisation of the Railway Workshops.

Nowadays, people are more attracted to the railway as its network is being expanded across the country, she said.

The Prime Minister also directed the railway ministry to arrange necessary training for their manpower to increase professional skills.

The new train “Panchagarh Express” will reach Dhaka Kamalapur Rail Station from Panchagarh in 7 hours travelling 593 kilometres and making stopovers at Thakurgaon, Dinajpur, Parbatipur and Dhaka Airport Station on the route.

It will leave from Panchagarh at 1:15pm and reach Kamalapur Railway Station by 10:35pm, and will depart from Dhaka at 12:10am and arrive at Panchagarh at 9:40am.

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Qader, Agriculture Minister Dr Abdur Razzaque and Liberation War Affairs Minister A K M Mozammel Haque were present on the dais.

Railways Minister Md Nurul Islam Sujan spoke at the programme from Bir Muktijoddha Sirajul Islam Railway Station in Panchagarh through a videoconference.

Ministers, PM’s advisers, lawmakers, high civil and military officials were present on the occasion.

Indonesian Ambassador in Dhaka Rina P. Soemarno attended the programme.

PM’s Principal Secretary Md Nojibur Rahman moderated the inaugural ceremony while ecretary of Railways Ministry Md Mozammel Hossain gave a video presentation on the verall development of Bangladesh Railway.

The prime minister later talked to the cross section of people including public epresentatives, freedom fighters, government officials, students, teachers and eneficiaries of the new train service.

Bold part: I think it will be great if the railway ministry is able to manufacture the railway locomotives, coaches and goods wagon in the country. It should start from the goods wagon which is simpler and many people have already gained experience with steel plates in the shipbuilding industry that can be used.

About high-speed trains, it may cost $10million or more to build a single km of the double track line. Dhaka-Ctg. present rail distance is 245 km. So, the cost will become ($10m x 245km) = $2,450 million. Now, add at least another $1,000 million for things like modern stations, yards, maintenance workshops, signaling system, underground rail/road crossings, and many river bridges.

I have not included the cost of purchasing new lands and soil filling works for the entire new line. Could it be another $1,000 million or more than that? A gigantic project is not a free lunch. It comes only with big money though Hasina Bibi takes advantage of her position to speak so many dreams.

Simply speaking, the cost will be somewhere between $3.5 billion to $4.5 billion. Where from Bibi Hasina will get this money? I think it is, as usual, another of her political jargons without an essence. Finance Ministry will veto it. The jargon will remain below the drawing board and people will forget it in no time.

I am all for high speed trains, but before high speed rail gets implemented, there are prerequisites.

Such as,
  1. Daily track mechanical maintenance including that of switches (as in Japanese and Chinese Bullet train tracks), Japanese track crews correct faults twice a day. Only way to maintain safety for high speed trains.
  2. Removal of slums from Railways property right-of-way,
  3. Introduction of fault-proof digital switching using block system, etc. etc.
  4. The weight of rails used is also important and crucial for high speed usage.
    • In India Mainline high speed routes use heavy duty 100 pound rail (100 lbs. per yard, 176 net tons per mile of track, 30 feet of track per net ton, Stock lengths are 30', 33', 40' & 39' welded together with thermite-welded joints).
    • Bangladesh uses low quality soft and weak rail imported from India. which is 70 Pound rating (70 lbs. per yard). No wonder the rail gets bent and wavy so quickly and derailments occur even with trains traveling at 70 KMH.
    • This is not the fault of the Indians (who do have high quality options) but corrupt Bangladesh Railway leadership who decide to make cheap shortcuts and wish to pocket the difference.
The list is too long....

What does it tell that the people around the railway track keeps on raining stones on the passing trains. Last time saw the newly introduced Indonesian trains badly damaged by stones and people keeps on injuring.

Hasina Bibi was talking of Dhaka-Cox7s Bazaar distance and my estimate in the previous post was for only the 245 km long Dhaka-Ctg. Add another 145 km to this to reach Cox's Bazaar. The total distance becomes 390 km. Please calculate the cost rise by yourselves. Hasina Bibi is unable to do this kind of math. She passed her two-year B.A course with a grace mark.

No doubt, Hasina Bibi will sell her parental properties in Tungibari to finance this cheap project. But, before doing this one, why does not she talk about constructing another parallel track for the present Dhaka-Ctg single track line for the normal trains? People have been waiting to see this project materialization since 1947.

Dhaka- Chittagong high speed rail project already planned at an estimated cost of 6 billion USD. Train speed expected to be 200 km/hour.

They won't stop until police start arresting them in large number. Arresting 100's of them would send a good message.

Dhaka-Chittagong rail distance is 320 km. Road distance itself is 265 km.

what is maximum railway speed in BD?
30 :enjoy: !!!

So 50 miles an hour is high speed, and 70 mph is bullet train speed in BD !!
Currently intercity trains run at speed 70-80 km/h. However Government is planning for high speed rail link from Dhaka to Chittagong to Cox’s Bazar and Dhaka to Payra sea port at a speed range 200 km/hour to as high as 300 km/hour.
Recently inaugurated train from Rajshahi to Dhaka has maximum speed at 110 km, average speed is 85 km. Other intercity train has average speed at 60-80 km.

For a longer distance of 320 km, the cost of construction will rise up. @Black_cats says it is $6 billion. In case, if it is a new track on newly filled earthwork on a new route, I understand that until the feasibility study has been made and finance arranged, the project will remain only in the newspapers.

However, I believe in the full utilization of the current track and its soil bed. Upgrade the existing track, double-track it and do electrification to support 100 kph speed. It will be feasible because the passenger will be using it as they will not pay a too higher a ticket cost.

It is expected to come online by June, 2022. :coffee:

100 lashes need to be administered for every stone thrown. Very simple. There are uncivilized low-life people everywhere who think they are too smart.

In the US these days we have something called 'facial recognition' technology. And people have smart phone cameras too which can use them - use it behind a sheet of unbreakable 'polycarbonate glass'. Report or text it to the nearest police station and have them take immediate action. They can't go very far very quickly.
