PM flies to Germany next week
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will leave for Germany next week to attend the World Health Summit and hold talks with German leaders on expansion of bilateral trade and economic ties.
The health summit will be held in Berlin on October 23-26.
Hasina is expected to leave Dhaka on October 22, foreign ministry sources said yesterday.
From Germany, the prime minister will travel to Australia to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting scheduled to be held in Perth on October 28-30.
In November, she will visit the Maldives to attend the 17th Saarc Summit, and in December she will pay a bilateral visit to Myanmar, the sources said.
In Australia and the Maldives, Hasina is expected to meet her Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh. The two leaders are likely to use the occasions to review bilateral issues, including sharing of the Teesta water, said the sources wishing anonymity.
In Germany, Hasina will meet German Chancellor Angela Merkel on October 25. She will also hold talks with other senior members of the government and Federal President Christian Wulff.
Several ministers, including Foreign Minister Dipu Moni, will accompany the prime minister during the trips, the sources said.
Around 1,200 high-ranking political figures, policy makers, scientists and scholars from more than 80 countries will participate in the health summit.
The theme of the summit is Today's Science - Tomorrow's Agenda.
The summit will discuss six important issues -- bridging health gaps with vaccines, research for neglected diseases of poverty, promoting health-preventing non-communicable diseases, global mental health, climate change and health and public health response to mega-disasters.
On the bilateral front, several high-profile German government leaders and Federal President Christian Wulff will visit Bangladesh this year. The president will come next month.
In Australia, Hasina is expected to meet several Commonwealth leaders on the sideline of the summit, known as CHOGM. The theme of the summit this year is "Building National Resilience, Building Global Resilience".
Hasina's two-day bilateral visit to Myanmar is expected on December 9-10.
