In Chittagong - the route has to be planned carefully because of several low lying hills (~200-500 ft. high) which may require a combination of pier-supported and tunnel boring situation.
This is quite unlike Dhaka where Line 6 was totally pier supported (above ground). However for Lines 1 and 5 there will be a combination of 'above-ground' and 'cut-n-cover' construction methods adopted. If soil-liquefaction and integrity is NOT an issue (or cost of remediation thereof), then they MAY bore under hills using the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) method. BUT TBM is the most expensive because of,
a) how expensive the borer machines themselves are, and
b) the massive shuttering costs at the entrance and egress points of the tunnels.
Likewise, it is the last resort of all the available options - like in the Karnaphuli tunnel under the mouth of the Karnaphuli, as is currently ongoing. It is the first TBM project in Bangladesh.
