March 5, 2007 Sri Lanka & United States entered into a 10-year agreement to provide reciprocal logistical support for their respective military forces.

The Acquisition and Cross-Servicing Agreement (ACSA) was signed by Sri Lanka's Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapakse & US ambassador Robert Blake, the US embassy said.

"The agreement will allow the US & Sri Lanka to transfer and exchange logistics supplies, support, and re-fueling services, either in kind or at cost," a statement from the embassy said.

"Each nation's forces can support the other during contingencies, such as disaster relief or peacekeeping operations, which reduces the logistics requirement for each nation," the statement added.

Talks with Somali pirates 'underway'

Dhaka, Dec 7 (bdnews24.com)—The government has started negotiations with Somali pirates to free the seized Bangladeshi ship and its sailors, two ministers have said.

Foreign minister Dipu Moni and shipping minister Shajahan Khan told these to the editors and representatives of news media at a meeting on Tuesday.

An editor, on conditions of anonymity, told bdnews24.com: "It was claimed in the meeting that contact has been established with pirates' representatives through various organisations involved in rescue process."

Information has it that the ship is still in the Arabian Sea and that the sailors were in good health. However, it might take two more days for the ship to reach the shore.

"However, we have not been able to contact the pirates ourselves and will have to wait until the ship reaches shore," Moni added.

At the end of meeting, the foreign minister said, "We have already contacted rescue organisations of various countries to help us recover the ship and free the sailors. The organisations have established contact with the representatives of the pirates."

The Bangladesh-flagged ship, 'MV Jahan Moni', was hijacked by pirates on Sunday around 3.45pm in the Arabian Sea off the coast of India. Twenty-five Bangladeshi sailors and the family of one sailor were on board.

On Sunday night, the shipping minister denied the ship was from Bangladesh. He told bdnews24.com, "It is a Malaysian ship."

nautical miles away from Somalian
coast.
Meherul Karim, general manager of
Bravewell Ship Management
Limited, the owner of MV Jahan
Moni, told bdnews24.com that
satellite photographs confirmed the
ship's position around 7pm on
Friday.
"If the trajectory remains
unchanged the ship may reach the
coast around 2am (Bangladesh
time)," he said.
The ship's e-mail and satellite
phone are active. However, neither
the pirates nor the crew could be
contacted, according to him.
The nearest coastal Somalian city is
Garacad.
The pirates seized the ship on
Sunday around 3:45pm in the
Arabian Sea off the coast of India.

Says owner; Crews' families tell of ransom demands

The families of two crew of hijacked ship MV Jahan Moni yesterday claimed that the pirates demanded ransoms for their release. But the figures vary wildly.

Mohammad Shahjahan, owner of the hijacked ship, contradicted them saying the pirates had not yet demanded any ransom.

He said the captain of the ship told him over the phone that all 26 Bangladeshis on board the vessel are in good health.

Urmila Sharmin, wife of Abul Bashar, 28, second engineer of the ship, said the pirates demanded $9 million, while Bilkis Rahman, the mother of another crew, said the abductors demanded Tk 900 crore.

Urmila said her husband called her at about 10:00pm from the phone of a pirate and said the pirates asked him to pay a ransom of $9 million as soon as possible.

Bashar talked to her for nearly three minutes and said the ship would run out of food and fuel in five days.

Earlier, the ship owner claimed that the vessel had a stock of food and fuel for the crew for two months.

The pirates hijacked the Bangladesh-flagged ship in the Arabian Sea off the coast of India on December 5.

Bilkis Rahman, mother of engine cadet Md Shahriar Rabbi, 21, said her son called her at about 10:10am yesterday and said the pirates had confined the crew to the navigation deck.

She said Rabbi sobbed during the 10-minute conversation. He told her that they were allowed to use only one toilet.

"Please rescue us. Tell the government to do something, otherwise the pirates will torture us," she quoted her son as saying.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Shahjahan, owner of SR Shipping Ltd, said the pirates allowed the ship's Chief Engineer Motiul Maola and his wife Roksana to talk to him over the phone at about 2:30pm. The two told him that all the crewmembers were in good health.

Shahjahan, also chairman of Royal Shipping Ltd, told journalists that the prates made two phone calls -- one at 2:30pm and another at 7:00pm. He was speaking at a press conference at his office in Agrabad in the port city last night.

He said 24 Somali pirates held control of the ship.
