KARACHI: Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) on Friday said it had attracted an additional one million passengers this year, which significantly helped to boost its share in air travel services.

The market share of the state-owned airline has “increased by 22% on domestic flights and 3% on the international sector during the current year,” said PIA spokesman Danyal Gilani in a statement.

“PIA Premier (service) has also played a key role in regaining the market share. [It] has played an important role in restoring passenger confidence and improving the brand image,” he added.

The airline introduced the premier flights on Lahore/Islamabad-to-London routes in August 2016.

Another official of the airline said the “departure of flights on scheduled time is [the] primary reason behind winning hearts and minds of the passengers.”

Other reasons for the increase in passengers are induction of new planes – narrow-body aircraft (A-320) – into the fleet over the last two years and serving of better-quality and different varieties of food on the flights.

PIA CEO Bernd Hildenbrand said the other day PIA had achieved a regularity of 99%, while its on-time performance had reached 85%, which was second only to Saudi Airlines in the region.

The official added that increased flight operation on various international and domestic routes had also attracted new passengers to the airline.

In the current year, PIA has increased a number of flights on international routes, including Kuala Lumpur, Dubai, Jeddah and Kabul. It has also started flight operation to Salalah, Oman this week.

Moreover, it has increased flights on domestic routes, including Islamabad-Faisalabad, Quetta-Multan, Karachi-Lahore, Karachi-Faisalabad and Karachi-Sialkot.

Expanding routes: PIA starts flights to Salalah

The increasing number of pilgrims going to Makkah and Madina for performing Haj and Umrah remains a big source of passenger traffic to the airline.

As per recently unveiled plans, the airline aims to increase the number of aircraft in its fleet to 60 by 2020. At present, it has 38 aircraft.

It also aims to start flights to Barcelona, Leipzig and Bangkok in the near future. In addition to this, PIA is planning to increase flights to Paris, New York, Beijing and Toronto. The airline, however, has not given any timelines for the new flights.

The cash-strapped airline reported in October 2016 that its accumulated losses had increased by 2.3% to Rs267.56 billion in the quarter ended March 31. In calendar year 2015, the losses had piled up by Rs32.13 billion.

Gilani added that premier flights were a new business venture and they would take time to become profitable. “A brand new A-330… has been acquired in a transparent manner, strictly in accordance with PPRA rules, at market price.”

I've always travelled PIA and have always had a thoroughly good service. It's the passengers on PIA that ruin things. The worst 2 airlines I have travelled on are Aerofloat and Easy Jet.

Our people have the tendency to misbehave and not listen to airhostess . especially the labour class . there will always be this one guy whos talking on the phone while take off and the air hostess has to constantly tell him to turn it off while the guy pays no attention .

Same. Its not Emirates or Turkish of course, but its no way as horrible as many people make it to be either. The only issue I have ever had with PIA flights is with fellow passengers. Had a fat b'astard once claiming my seat when it says clearly on the ticket he is sitting further behind. Poor air hostesses have to deal with shi't like that on a regular basis, so you understand why they arent the most delightful bunch either.

Some people think just because they bought the ticket they own the plane now . Then doing trivial stupid things like ordering pepsi 5 times etc etc .

Lol.....so true. It happens on every flight. In my personal experience, PIA has very good food, service and entertainment. The biggest problem of PIA however is the passengers. But that's not their fault. Also, our stewards and stewardesses are exceptionally good looking.

Lol......and they want it for free to. Any other airline would make them pay for it.

Just tried the new website and it actually looks modern and good! Kudos to PIA for the website!

EasyJet not bad for price, after all it is a no frill airline.

True that, the main thing that PIA needs to fix are the IFE systems on its 777 and A320 (I think they should add IFM to it) fleet and fix up the food a bit and the airline will be decent.
Even now its not that bad when flying on it. To be honest I prefer flying on our national airline.

Why is it that unfortunately Pakistanis want everything for free on PIA and behave badly on it Wheras on the airlines of other nations they are willing to pay for anything and behave in a hyper disciplined manner?

I only travel PIA, never any bad experience...it feels like apni air line, you can walk in the kitchen anytime and ask for anything they have. Some Pakistani who bash anything Pakistani wants PIA to be world class airline and then and only then they will travel
