Peshawar Airbase has been a key airbase for nearly a CENTURY on the Western front. Currently it is serving as the part of the PAFs Northern air Command. In the Past it was also used and developed by the RAF,RPAF and the USAF for missions in the Tribal,Afghan and Soviet theaters .

From 1922 to 1940 Royal Air Force Station Peshawar housed 4 RAF squadrons: Nos 5, 20, 28 and 31. The station provided close support to army units which included the Nowshera Brigade and other field regiments in the North West Frontier.

In October 47 RPAF Station Peshawar, Wing Commander E Nazirullah was its first station commander, had under its command Nos 5 and 9 RPAF Squadrons.

In December 1948, a fighter-bomber wing was formed at Peshawar and a year later Fury aircraft replaced the Tempests in the squadrons.

In February 1958, Nos 11 and 15 Squadrons, equipped with F-86F aircraft, moved to Peshawar from Masroor and were joined soon by No 20 Squadron flying RT-33As.

On 1 May 1960, a United States U-2 spy plane was shot down by the Soviet Air Defence Forces while performing photographic aerial reconnaissance deep into Soviet territory. The single-seat aircraft, was flown by pilot Francis Gary Powers, from Peshawar airbase.

From Peshawar the 19 Squadron mounted their spectacular strikes on Pathankot.

No 26 Squadron, one of the units earlier based at Peshawar, was reequipped with A-5 III aircraft on 20 June 84.
Helicopter Flying Training School (HFTS) located in PAF Base Peshawar-1980s
HFTS was established as Rescue Flight in 1963. It was later raised to the level of the squadron in 1965. From 1965 to 1995 the school continued to perform its primary role of providing Search and Rescue to PAF related flying and also to other aviation agencies operating in nearby vicinity. In 1995,the squadron was given the additional task of conducting Basic Helicopter Conversion Course and Qualified Helicopter Instructor Course.
PAF Base Peshawar's significance as a strategically vital airfield has never diminished. Today it continues to undertake important border air defence and strike operations. PAF professionals based in Peshawar have excelled manifolds the legacy left by their predecessors a CENTURY ago. May Allah bless them with more glory and prowess. Ameen
